' Erery 24 honrs fire destroys 1,211 buildings. Of these 31 are homes 5 - are schools 5 are churches 15 are hotel buildings 6 are department stores 2 are theatres 8 are public garages 3 are printing plants- 3 are ' dry goods stores 96 are farm build ings. The balance of 137 are mis cellaneous occupancies. Fire costs America over 3800.00 a minute, or 348,200.00. erery hour. " In the last fire years- the total property loss from fire reaches the gigantic total of 32,088,392,098. In the last five years' the total number of lives lost from fire ex ceeded '50,000 almost as great a loss as that of American soldiers in the World war. More than 75 per cent of the losses of life from fires occur in dwellings. Of the lives lost in dwelling fires, more than one-third . are children," Three thousand fire hundred people are burned to death in farm fires each year. The farm fire loss -amounts to, in round numbers, 3150,000,000 each year. The majority of farm fires are due to Just seven causes all largely preventable. In the ap proximate order of their Impor tance these are: . (1) Lightning (2) Defective chimneys and heating apparatus (3) Matches and smoking (4) Combustible roofs (5) Spontaneous Ignition (6) Gasoline and kerosene (7) Electricity Nine out of ten fires of all kinds could be prevented. Everyone you meet or talk to or know will help pay for a fire to day. The cost of fire goes into ev ery budget.
