J SILVERTON, Sept. 26.(Spe- clal) Justice court chambers were crowded beyon capacity to day for hearings growing ont of an episode last week on ine farm three and a half miles south of Silrerton which Otto Schlack Is leasing from J. Hartwell and his wife, Mrs. H. B. Hartwell. Outcome of the hearings: Otto. Schlack, accused of assault and battery in complaint made by Mrs. M. B. Hartwell. was freed. Mrs. Frances Schlack, accused of assault and battery on com plaint made by Mrs. Hartwell, held to answer to the grand jury. Out on $100 bail. J. Hartwell, accused of point ing a gun, with Otto Schlack the complaining witness, waived pre liminary hearing and bound oyer to the grand Jury. Out on XZ50 bail. Scores Both Sides Judge Frank Alfred, before whom the hearing was held, at one point scored both sides for excessive contradictory evidence. The trouble arose over a water pipe line which Mrs. Schlack tes tified Hartwells had tried to turn off. The Schlacks further claimed that something had been put in the water and testified that Mrs Hartwell had said this substance was lime. Schlack, so the test! mony ran, was so ill as result of drinking the water he had to con sult a doctor. Neither of the Hartwells testified on this mat ter. At one point, Hartwell testi fied Mrs. Schlack declared during the altercation "I hate-you and I'll kill you." All admitted Mrs. Schlack tore off Mrs. Hartwell's glasses dur ing the fight. Joseph Felton represented the district attorney's office at the hearing, and John Eayne the Schlacks. School at Central Howell is One Of Demonstration Classrooms For New Rational System of Teaching rEVTRAI, HOWELTi. Sent. It. Central Howell school started Monday with a total enrollment 01 67 pupils. Mrs. Grace Sehon, teacher of the advanced room, has 29 pupils, and Mrs. Jessie Rains, primary teacher, has 28. In the eighth grade are: MarJoy,Herr, Carolyn Kaufman, Anna Mae Pal lesen, Clarence and Bobby Sim mons, Bobby Way and Douald Nafxiger. The six beginners are: Allie Maxine Werner, Mary Lou Fes kins, Phyllis Steffen, Estella Bak er, Philip Simmons and Bruce Beal. New pupils are Violet, El Tin, Ellen Marie, Eugene and Estella Baker, children of Mr. anrf Mrs. Ralnh S. Baker. Fred Znrcher Hurt PrM Zurcher was hit bv a car last week as he was walking home after a day of prune picking. Two speeding cars passed him and Just as they passed the one car swenr ed running over the boy's toot and hitting his wrist. His foot is badly discolored and the exact extent of his Injuries Is hard to determine. He will be unable to be on .his feet for some time. - Mrs. J. S. Kaufman, Carolyn, John and Chlrley are home after spending the summer visiting In Mrs. Kaufman's home state of U- llnois and other eastern states. Friends have received word of the marriage of Miss Esther Liechty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Liechty, to Robert H. Da lch at Santa Barbara, Calif., Sep tember 10. The young couple will live at Bakerstield. The W. C. Rutschman and W. A. Roth families came home vhe latter part of last week after month's vacation. They had an enjoyable time visiting various places of Interest on their way to Kansas. On their way home they attended the fair at San Diego. Accident is Fatal To John Pleasuk Two New Arrivals SILVERTON, Sept. 26, A seven-pound son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Brewer at the Sil ver to u hospital, September 21, and a daughter was born to Mr. and Mr3. Claire Palmer Tuesday at the hospital. This is the first grandchild of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Palmer. Boys Lead in Test RICKEY, Sept. 26 Results of the achievement test given at Rickey school last term have Just been received and show John Bur ton was first with 102.5 and Ed ward Burton second with lOi. Keep Mi31 Solution handy 4S)C MOLALLA, Spt. 26 Funeral arrangements for John Pleasuk, 46, who died Tuesday following an automobile accident near Mol alla, remained unmade Wednes day evening while county offi cers still investigated the cause of his death.- He died at the Hutchinson tjospital in Oregon City. He had been living near Molalla for several months. He is survived by a widow and son in Poland. He had lived in this coun try seven years. He was injured Monday when he was returning from the hop yards in a machine driven by B. W. Pollard, Molalla. The car col lided with another driven by G. W. Sizer, Oregon City. Opal Pol lard, another occupant of the car, received a fractured arm and a fractured right collar bone. Raleigh Eclierd ; I Dies in Hospital MOLALLA, Sept. 26 Raleigh Echerd, 42, died Tuesday night at the Hutehinsoa hospital la Oregon City. He had been critically sick for a week, following aa appendi citis operation. He rallied the first of this week and hopes wire held for his recovery. The funeral will be held Friday at 2. p. m. at the Everhart . funeral home. Rev. Jamea T. Love officiating. Burial will be at the Adams cemetery. Mr. Echerd was born April 12, 1883, in Fort Worth, Texas. He had lived In Molalla' since coming here in 1898 with his parents. He was a veteran of the World War and saw six months active ser vice in France. He belonged to a number of organizations, includ ing the Masons, the Odd Fellows, the Eastern Star, the Artisans and tbe Rebekabs.. He had been a mail carrier since 1915. During his sickness the people on his mail route hare paid many trib utes to his cheerfulness and his willingness to accomodate. . He leaves his mother, Mrs. Fannie Echerd; three sisters, Mrs. , Martin TJldall. Molalla, Mrs. H. D RundelL Newberg, and Nola Ech erd, Molalla; and two brothers. Mrs. Kraus and daughter Margaret have returned from a 11-weeks trip to Wisconsin where they vis ited with relatives.' Mrs. Kraus resided there 15 years ago. They spent most of their time at Kau kauna, but also visited Appleton, Sturgeon ' Bay, Manitowac, Mil waukee, Oshkosh and Manitowac Rapids and other states. John and Henry Stute returned Friday from a two-weeks trip to California where they attended the, San Diego exposition and oth er southern parts. The Frank Thompson family moved Monday to a farm at Scio. Mrs. Thompson was a member of the St. Louis choir and has a beau tiful soprano voice, that this par ish will miss greatly.
