B., 78, died at St. Benedict's Abbey at noon, Wednesday, September 11. He had been iil tor some time. . Brother Lawrence was, born in the Saarlonis district, Rhineland, Germany, August 27, 1967. As a young man he came to the Uni ted States. After having worked on a (arm in Kansas tor some years, he came to Oregon and Joined the Benedictine community at MC Angel as a religious lay brother. He prononnced his re ligious tows on the 12 th of March, 1893, together with three other young men, of whom only one, Brother Augustine, the present porter at the abbey Is yet lir ing. - During these many years of re ligious life, he spent bis time in prayer and work, both at the Benedictine Press and on the farm attached to the abbey. Funeral services will -be held from the abbey chapel, Saturday at 7:45 a. m. Interment will be in the abbey cemetery. Reuben Miller, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Miller, re turned home from the Good Sam aritan hospital, Portland, this week. The boy had his leg se verely burned last June while trying to burn out an ax handle with the aid of coal oil and the burn failed to. heal until he was taken to the hospital to have skin grafted on. He is reported doing fine and hopes to attend school when it opens next week. Ladies Entertain Rickreall Aid on Wednesday Afternoon RICKREALL, Sept. 12. Mrs. Jennie Dempsey, Mrs. T. W. Burch and Mrs. A. G. Adams were hostesses to the members of the Rickreall Ladies aid in the Demp sey home Wednesday Jafternoon. Brilliant hued fall flowers graced Jthe living room. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. D. V. Price, vice-president. The nom inating committee was appointed: Mrs. Joe Stunlmon, Mrs. Cass Gibson. Mrs. Charlotte Orr Mrs. Lloyd Springer, all of Salem. The October meeting will be at the country home of Miss Cora Know leg and Mrs. Georgianna Heidick. Mrs. H. A. Dempsey was appoint ed to represent the aid when a fire protection association is form ed by the several societies of the community.. Mrs. E. A. Hamilton, Mrs. W. C. Hill were appointed as a commit tee to get' adequate room to enter tain a group of neighboring aids and woman's club the latter part of October. Bear Cubs Make Camp Interesting RICKREALL, Sept. 12. Ac cording to Grant Adams who is ny, the, rioverdale CCC camp 963, their pet bears make camp life interesting for the 20 boys. Some of the prune orchards here started picking prunes this week while others will tegin next wekk. Some of the hop yards near here are finishing this week. Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Winter left Tuesday morning for their home in Nampa, Idaho, after spending a few days at the home of his sister, Mrs. M. A. Bielen- berg and family. His brother, Frank, who was seriously injured in a logging camp a week ago, is holding his own, but still in a serious condition at the Silverton hosDital. Herman Landwlng who was op erated on for sinus trouble at St. Vincent's hospital In Portland 10 days ago, returned home Sunday and is getting along satisfactor ily. Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. L. C. Jamleson in Edmonton hospital, Canada, on August 30, from a lingering ill ness. Mrs. Jamieson was a sis ter of Mrs. J. N. Cochran Visit at Lyons Sundays Personal Items -LYONS, Sept. 12. Rey 'and Mrs. Earl Cochran of Salem were Sunday visitors at the Lyons M. E. church. Graveside services for Mrs. C. T. Wilkinson of Albany were held at the Fox Valley cemetery Monday after noon. The Wilkinson family were residents of this locality about 30 years ago and have a small daugh ter buried here. Mrs. Wilkinson is survived by her husband, C. T. Phone 3810 Refunding Report Made by Treasurer SCIO, Sept. 12. Approxim ately $8000 of the 110,000 bond ed indebtedness of the city of Scio will be included in the pro posed new financing program, ac cording to representations made by E. D. Myers, city treasurer, at the September meeting of .the town council. It Is believed the remaining $2000 will be handled in the same way, the holder at Salem contemplating a sale which will enable the city to make a cleanup of the entire amount un der a refunding -plan. A resolu tion was adopted authorizing de struction of the old bonds upon exchange for the new series. The city budget committee sub-. mitted to the council a schedule for running expenses for 1936. The amount is $2350, as against $3200 for the current year. Re duction results from less amounts to be paid on warrant and bond Indebtedness during the coming year. The report and recommen dation of the budget committee is to have final action at the coun cil meeting to be held October 3 next. SPARKLE!
