"I believe these warrants were misplaced whe we were making a change in personnel here last . summer," said Sheriff Burk late yesterday. ''Naturally I am pleas ed to have the matter cleared up. Our department has known for ' nearly a year that there was a discrepancy between the amount of taxes receipted for and the turnover to the treasurer's office. However it did not show In cash records since our bank records and the cash turned in balanced. I do not know how these war rants were misplaced. I think one of the deputies, not here now, carelessly placed them in the cub byhole in the vault at closing time one business day. When we open ed up the next morning and de posited our cash in the bank, the warrants were overlooked.' The discrepancy in the sher iff's books first was brought to the attention of the county court this spring when J. H. Rowland and L. S. Coovert were conducting the annual audit of all county offices'for the county court. They reported a discrepancy of $3044 .in the sheriff's books between the cash and warrants receipted for and amount ot moneys turned over to thetreasurer. The county court promptly in formed District Attorney Trindle of the shortage and at his sugges tion the state auditing department was called In to check the records of the tax collection office. The 1935 legislature passed an act authorizing counties to employ the services of the state auditing department when they were de sired.
