Hill (D-Wash) protldlnr a 13 per cent excise tax on im ported chemical wood pulp - was filed with the house ways and means committee today by Repre sentative Wallgren (D - W a s h). The petition contained the names of f 2 members of the house. Hill's bill has been in the com mittee for several weeks and de mands for a hearing increased among members of congress after announcement by the state de partment that chemical wood pulp was bound to the free list in the proposed reciprocal trade agree ment with Sweden. That action brought protests from all sections of the country where wood pulp Is manufactured or where plana.t were being made for developing the i n d u s t r jr. While members of congress were denouncing the action of the state department, former Senator C. C. Dill, of Washington, openly ques tioned the legality of the depart ment s action, declaring that the reciprocal trade law did not .give the president or the department power to bind an item to the free list any more than, it gave them the power to place an item on or remove it from the list. a Kind a Crowd ITS TEN O CLOCK!
