IBM Says Farm Crops Estimate; Price Level Shows Slight Slip With more exres planted, bettor growing conditions, and more people on farms than a year ago. gross agricultural production in the United States may be expected to be more nearly normal than in 1934, says the monthly report on the agricultural situation just re leased by the Oregon State col lege, division of agriculture. Gross agricultural production In 1934 fell about 15 Per cent be low normal, due to increasea plantings and heavy drought damage. This year. 42 million more acres have been planted to crops, and growing conditions are a good deal better, the report points out The farm population registered a net increase of 270.000 people during the past year, bringing the total increase since 1930 up to 2,600,000. In spite of uie In crease in farm population, how ever, the circular says that the demand for hired labor t h Is spring was strong and farm wag es advanced nearly 10 per cent during the first quarter. The reneral level of farm pric es In the United States has slip ped back a little from a peak at mid-April of 84 per cent of the 1926-1930 average. Farm prices In the whole country are nearly 15 per cent below the pre-war purchasing power level, and near ly 30 per cent under parity in Oregon, according to data given in the circular. After raising 11 per cent fewer chickens In 1934. farmerly ap parently will incease the number raised this year as tnere were iu per cent more chicks and young chickens on farms on May 1 than a year ago. The report also re views the situation in respect to wheat, pastures and ranges, hay, fruit and nut crops UU YIELDS OF CHICAGO. A good deal of notice, too, was taken of trade statements that in addition to prospects the 1935 do mestic wheat harvest will be in excess of home needs, it is prob able decidedly less wheat will be fed to livestock the coming sea son, perhaps not more than 50,' 000,000 bushels. G1H III PROSPECT Wall Street Speeds IB IMES BETTER NEW YORK, June S.-iflVWall street again gave signs today that it was pulling Itself together, ana string itself a few tentative parts to make sure no vital bones had been broken when the NRA col lapsed about it early last week. On the whole the examination appeared reassuring. . Stocks changed hands at a more rapid pace, and moderately higher pri ces prevailed - in most groups of equities during the major portion of the trading session. Turnover in the stock exchange rose above the million-share mar ker, at 1,103,400 shares. The As sociated Press average for 60 stocks rose .2 of a point to 42.3 and the 15 utility Issues in the compilation for the second con secutive day advanced into new high territory for 1935, at 30.7, up .3 of a poiat. News from the business front was relatively good, and tended to Indicate that the disturbing effects of the passing of the codes had been less, so far, than had been feared in some quarters. The utility shares got a boost from the buoyant performance of American Telephone, which rose 3 full points to a new 1935 high at 1274. Two of Its subsidiaries reported during trading hours good gains in phones connected last month, and after the closing gong the parent company reveal ed that for the Bell system sta tions had risen 760 during May. Baking Group Busy One of the busiest and most favored groups was the baking stocks, with National Biscuit up points at 27, and Loose Wiles joined the parade with a lift of 1 points at 35, Con tinental, General and Purity came along with fair gains. Some of the best gains of the day were in the -specialty division. Coca Cola led with a gain of 8 points at 218, while others with advances of around 2 points or so Included American Safety Ra zor, Bayuk Cigar, Melville Shoe, Penick ft Fofd and Acme Steel. Most of the pivotal issues con fined advances to fractions, such as Westinghonse at 47. Con solidated Gas at 24, Pennsyl vania, at 21 and Standard Oil of N. J., at 49. Some registered small losses, as in Southern Pa cific at 16, U. S. Steel at 32, Chrysler at 45, General Motors at 30 and Sears at 38. Celery Crop Found Nearly Total Loss PORTLAND, June 5. (JP A huge loss, amounting almost to a total celery crop failure, was re ported today as a result of the survey of .the crop In western Ore gon, made by Peter Binn of Binn Brothers, growers and distribut ors. Damage to early celery by premature seeding was estimated from 40 to 100 per cent in various instances. Californi prices were higher. Gardeners' and Ranchers' Mart PORTLAND, Ore., June l.-iJF) -Strawberries were the exception to a general lull today at the gardeners' and ranchers' market. Demand lagged behind the heavy supplies, and quotations tended downward. Most activity centered in straw berries with the prices sliding. Shipments were moderately heavy, coming from mid-Columbia areas, the upper Willamette and from local growers. Gresham and Oregon City sup plies were larger. Gold Dollars and Red Hearts were seldom of fered and Oregons constituted the main supply with a few Marshals on the market. Oregons started at a 31.10 to 11.15 range, but late in the ses sion fell to new lows of 85 and 90 cents a crate. However, the low prices were for cleanup pur poses only. Lettuce prices also fell with supplies heavier and quality a little poorer. Another small shipment of gooseberries from Aurora caused little stir. Peas Oregon, lb., 2 e. On the open market values, have been held steady for some days past despite the erratic trend on the exchange. Butterfat values were steady. with an Increasing call for ice cream. Market for eggs was holding much the same as during recent days in the local trade. Outside markets were fractionally higher to lower in spots but nowhere was there any material change. Prices continued to rule strong in the market for chickens with keen request for broilers from killers at full prices at least. In fact all chickens were firmly priced. Some turkeys were moving to market but quality was not very good as a rule with resulting slow continued the cheapest fowl on the market. Country killed meats were prac tically unchanged for the day.
