Outline of Classroom Work
on Modernization is
Made by Gaiser.
? Salem school children, under
the direction ot Superintendent
Silas Gaiser are taking an active
Interest In the home moderniza
tion campaign for Marion county.
. Practically every angle ot the
campaign is to form the basis tor
class work in the various depart
ments of the local schools daring
the nest few weeks. The class
outline, suggested yesterday by
Superintendent Gaiser. is part of
-the campaign to better acquaint
every person In Marion county of
the needs and aims of-the.aome
modernization program.
'- "Such a federal movement as
the national housing act is packed
with significance, to the school
child," Superintendent Gaiser re
ported.' "Each department in the
secondary schools and in an adapt
ed form in the elementary schools,
can carry on class assignments ap-
" rroached from special interest and
through units of work in connec
tion with the renoTizing of the di
lapidated house now on the court
bouse lawn.
"There are many means to
stimulate each department into
thinking ot the ways such a ma-
" Jor governmental movement af
fects its students. It is a move-
ment profound-in its significance.
Discussion ot it is a vital step iifc
v the social education of a child."
- An outline of suggestions' for
the participation of each depart
ment in the progress of the cam
paign was reported by Superin
tendent Gaiser.
- The National Housing act opens
the door to much-needed improve
ments and recovery to the build
ing industry, in the opinion of the
country's leading architects as ex
pressed in letters to James A.
Moffett, federal housing adminis
' trator. They have pledged their
cooperation and in many instances
have launched campaigns on their
own Initiative to stimulate nterest
"in the better housing movement.
As expressed by Francis P. Sul
livan, A. L A., Washington. D.'C:
"During the past tew years not
' only has the construction of hew
buildings by private capital been
' almost entirely suspended but
' building, owners have in great
measure postponed or neglected
the ordinary repairs, upkeep and
betterments which In normal
4 times : would have been almost a
, matter of-course.
"This has resulted in excessive
, depreciation of the properties, a
' weakening of the security of
- mortgage loans and serious un-
employment in the building
; trades.
"Most owners now realize that
. with Improving business condl
t tions the - most modern, most
-' completely equipped and most at
r tractive buildings will be first in
demand and will be sure of the
, largest and most immediate re
turn in rentals.' ..
r They are accordingly prepar
' ing to place their properties in
first class condition to take ad-
r vantage of this prospective mar-
' act ana in many., instances nave
i only . been deterred - by financing
: problem . -;. . . - . .
The National Housing act of
fers the most practicable method
- of remedying this condition which
. ' has yet been proposed. It pro-
r vldes a means of mobilising priv-
ate capital for the service where
, it Is most needed, encourages bor
" rowers by the liberality of -its
; terms and protects Tenders.
"It should unquestionably be of
great service in hasten! 9 g recov
: vrr W releasing credits for use
in building operations, and it in
t telligent owners of property will
x proceed, without delay to. take "ad-
vantage of its provisions, with
the cooperation of the financial
institutions and the adminUtra-
tire- authorities the effect should
oe widespread and beneficial."

Many Houses as Obsolete in

No modern women in a west

not- realired the hidden value in
their old property.
Hidden. ' value is now being
brought to light by the National
Housing act and the universal in
terest in home renovlzing. Every
where property owners are dis
covering that, for acomparitively
small expenditure, much less than
the. cost of a new dwelling, they
may possess a completely modern
home, at the same time retaining
all the inherent worth of the old
house.
Much of the lumber in old hous
es is as sound as the day it was
installed and. In fact, frequently
will be found to be a better con
struction material than when it
was first used. This is because of
its years of seasoning. Many arch
itects and builders prefer this. old
lumber to new, unseasoned mater
ial and use it whenever possible
for the most exacting purposes.
Old Hoasee Well Built.
In addition, many, old houses
were built slowly and carefully in
a day of. less expensive labor.
