If the Oregon public would vote fof Roosevelt today which is - probable -then . the democratic candidate - for governor believes that It should rote for Roosevelt's anointed leader, the pink-cheeked .'general. The only hitch is pub-- . Be; acceptance of this syllagism. Win or lose. General Martin will J take weeks to recover from fhia campaign. It has been strenu ous.: At times It has been bitter. The "lunatic fringe' of the Ma honeya and ZImmermana are not of the general's persuasion and the lact that they have gained support and deflected from him fa aa annoyance. His auctions -to raise money are spectacular and la some way rote getters but they do not fill the chinks ot needed newspaper ad vertising, needed tnne on the air and ot a; paid campaign staff. There are elements ot Zimmer man strength which cannot be ignored. There are pockets of Zimmerman rotes scattered throughout the valley, as dense as an October tog. He has the endorsement of nnlon labor and of the Farmers' union. The grange, avowedly non-partisan, has not officially embraced the Yamhill county dirt-farmer, but it has billed -and-cooed so ardent ly there can be no question that all good grangers are expected to come to the aid of the independ ent. Then there Is Mahoney, on the warpath against all the works of Os West, which include -General Martin. Mahoney says he is sup porting no candidate but the prin ciples he espouses are those of Zimmerman. His followers, somewhat akin to the Townsend plan group in fervor, can be counted on as Zimmerman men. A careful observer ot Oregon politics, back from eastern Ore gon, saya that vast geographical area Is strong for Dunne, mild for Martin, cold on Zimmerman. If that be true, the Yamhill county man must run strongly in the valley and hold his own with his. two opponents In Portland. Odds Are Against . Zimmerman Victory. All In all, Zimmerman's strength Is a mystery. He may be a poor third. He may affright the other candidates as the re turns roll in. He might win. The odds are against him for he lacks money or manpower and Is apt to be lost in the Dunne vs. Martin main ring circus. R. R. The Goss-faction detests Turner for hla pro-primary attack. The arch-Delsellitea bear him no love. He la not a platform artist, thriv ing rather on pamphlets and let ters and personal attacks on his opponent. Mr. Mott Is banging away, as usual, being an ace-high cam paigner in his own right. Obvi ously bo Is embarrassed at the dif ficulty of being a good republi can, ,a good progressive and not too much or little of a New Deal er. His embarrassment la shared by most republican congressmen taking the lists this fall. His platform strength outshines that of Turner; his name la better known; he has a larger republi can registration than democratic in his district. He will probably win. With all the interest in Oregon politics, the fracas in this state is a pink-tea party compared to California. The entire nation w a t c h e s the Merriam - Sin clair fight. There money Is no object. The radio, newspaper and billboard proprletros enjoy a Ro man holiday. Merriam stands as the only barrier to Moscow, pleads one group; Sinclair is an apostle of the Abundant Life, cornea the retort. Go into San Francisco banks and you find executive officers wearing Merriam badges and more interested In heating Upton Sinclair than the news of t h e market. Go into the hundred and one Sinclair headquarters and John, the Baptist, Savonarola and John Brown are epitomized in the person of almost anyone ot the Sinclair managers. There's a fight and a real one.
