He la the aon of William T. and Eliza beta Hunsaker Miller, who cross ed the plains with their parents In 1847. 'William Miller settled about 12 tnfles south of Salem and here J. R. was bora. He attended school at Looney Butte. When be was 21 years ot age he attended Me Minnrllle college. He stayed at the farm until he waa 23 and In 1881 was united in marriage to . Mattle Thomas,' the daughter of Charles w and Mary Thomas, who took an active part In the : uuiiding or stayton. They came here In 18 8. ''. Mr. Mill er hauled logs to the Brown milL , The mill was a busy place in those days. : Some days there would be 35 or 40 wagons loaded with lumber ready to go out for somebody's new ' home or other building. About 1887, W. H. Hobson, Lee Brown (Stayton's first mayor) Uriah Whitney, Tom Slmms and John Shaw, all actiye in early af fairs of the Santiam ralley, decid ed to form a partnership and build a mm at Mill City. : Mr. Miller hauled the " lumber from Brown's sawmill here to Mill City to build the first ferry. He also hauled lumber to build ' the mill. He and his horses were in great demand In tarious parts . of the county when" ferry, poles or large smoke ' stacks were" to be raised as they were able to handle the Job well. After a time he gate up his Job with the sawmill and was inter ested in a harness -shop here with E. C. Baker. In 1825 ha. and W. E. Thomas purchased from Sarage brothers ' the chair factory here. Nothing but rawhide bottom chairs were made and there was a big demand for them. Some of the men were able to put seats'in 42 chairs In an hour.' Miller later bought. Thomas' interest Jn .the factory, Thomas going into the undertaking business, and after a. time sold the factory to Willis and Dennis Caldwell. Mrs. Miner died in 1898. The Millers had one daughter. Carrie, now Mrs. Lura A. Thomas, of Sa lem. ; Mr. Miller has followed the carpenter trade more lor less dur ing the later years until m lszo, following a severe attack of flue. he was obliged to giro up active labor. -: - " In 1518 he was carpenter for one of the large mills at Astoria. In -1227, on February 2. be was united in marriage to Emma Thomas, a daughter of Mr. and - Mrs. Charles Thomas, and a sis ter of bis first wife. She passed awar about 2 years ago. He and his wife had been ; members of the Baptist church for many years. Mr. Miller- tor. 68 years. ; While his health was good he served as superintendent of the ; Sunday school, choir, leader and took an active part in church jwork. Since he has , been . obliged to give np active work Jie has devot ed his time to gardening and es pecially delights In raising flow ers. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Paulson are being congratulated upon the arrival of a son, the second child. Mrs. Paulson' and children are at the home of Mrs. Paulson's mother at Gates for the present. They have Just recently moved from Mill city 'to a small place three miles west of town. The Ray Paulson family who have been living on the William Culleus place have moved to the King place recently vacated by the Her- ron family on King s Prairie and the Herron family are now occu pying the Lefferson place Just west of Mill City. The Harry Chances have moved from the Baldwin place to the Cullens pro perty and Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Hal Ugan are moving to the Baldwin place.
