In spite of the efforts of two fire depart ments, fire burned to the ground the barn, granary, garage, straw- stack and haystack belonging to A. Plennert, late Wednesday af ternoon. Plennert's farm, the former Joe Kirsch place, is situ ated about a mile and a half southwest of Mt. Angel. As yet no clue as to the origin of the fire is known." The Plennerts had been absent from the place all day and had only jnBt returned home when they saw smoke appearing from behind the barn. The Mt. Angel fire department was called and later the firemen from gilrerton but a strong wind and the lnflam mable character of the material made it Impossible to sare the buildings. The chicken house Was Bared with difficulty. Fire eren escaped into the fields- but was extinguished. The car was tak en out of the garage in time to 'save it. Ihe barn was filled with hay, all of which burned, as did also S50 bushels of wheat, some cf which has Just been purchased for seed wheat. Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Cameron (Miss Billie Johnson) were feted at the September social meeting of the Bilrerton Legion post and its aux iliary. .Mrs. Cameron, had been elected to head the local Legion Auxiliary the past two years. Her marriage to Mr. Cameron was an erent of September S. Kenneth Hansen, retiring com mander or the surerton post, was toastmaster at the supper hour, presenting a large sllrer platter and a wedding cake sufficiently large to prorlde helptBg to the 100 guests. . At the supper table, Mr. - and Mrs. Charles Johnson, parents of Mrs. Cameron, and Mrs. Gertrude Cameron, mother of Mr. Cameron, were giren places of honor." Shanks of the Munkers section left Monday for a deer hunt in the Blue mountains of eastern Oregon. A quilting and miscellaneous shower for Mrs. Belle Archer, who lost all her clothing, household effects, keepsakes, etc., in the re cent fire at the Sam Gaines farm near Scio, was held at Franklin Butte school house Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Mars, old friends of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nadvornlk, were here Sunday from Dickinson, North Dakota, for a brief visit. They hare pur chased a 20-acre tract of land near Salem and expect to occupy the property as soon as practica ble. Mr. Mars formerly was cash ier of a bank at Dickinson. Word from Lester Bilyeu near Cutbank, Montana, is to the effect that his grain crops promised somewhat better yields than had been anticipated a fe weeks ago, although drouth and heat in that part of the state had reduced farm crops to a considerable extent. Mrs. Lester Bilyeu, who has been a patient at the state tuberculosis hospital for a few weeks, is re ported doing well, the chief physi cal ailment being pronounced a heart affliction instead of lung trouble. Next Mon- day business houses will all re sume their regular hours and will close at 6 p. m. The stores hare kept open evenings to supply the wants of a large number of hop pickers. At the end of the week all hops will be practically harvested. The season has been a long one. Hops hare been generally light and hard to pick, which has caus ed some dissatisfaction among the workers. The picking price has been SI to SI. 25 a hundred pounds. Children are back in their class rooms which leaves the pick ing force about equal to the de mand. Dr. E. Amll Schumacher, a young breeder of Chester white and spotted Poland China hogs, arrived home Sunday. He showed at both the state fair and at Canby fair. In eight en tries of his Chester whites at the state fair he won as many ribbons. One blue and one red included in that number. On his Poland Chi nas he did equally as well, win ning grand champion and junior sow. His winning at Canby fair were even better than the state fair. School opened Monday with (0 enrolled, however, this number will be-,- greatly increased within the month as a good 'many' chil dren ef this, district are still em ployed In the hopyards. The rooms were all painted and new floors layed prior to the opening of school. Stayton schools opened Monday and al though the attendance so far in the nigh school is below that of previous years it will increase as the. young folks return from hop yards and other places. .High school pupils are getting their books through the rental system. Inaugurated last year by Prof. H. E. Toble, books which cost from $1.50 to $1.00, they may rent for SO cents. The grade school books are furnished by the state. Enrollment In the grade school was 112, with 15 yet to come, the largest -enrollment there last year was 133. The seventh grade has the largest class with 16, the eighth grade has 13 with 5 to come and in the second grade there are 24 and this year 14 lit tle folk entered as beginners.
