By RALPH H. KLETZINO
Movement of United States
citizens to Canada has steadily
declined from about 20,000 in
1929 to only 13,000 in 1933. How
ever, during the eight years from
1924 to 1932, inclusive, a total of
262,000 natural born and 13,000
naturalized Canadian, citizens re
turned to their own country from
the United States.
O
Manv Shetland ponies come
from the Shetland (or Zetland)
islands, an archipelago off north
era Scotland, where this diminu
tive breed of horses originated and
from which they received their
name. Others come from breeding
farms which have been established
in other parts of Scotland and in
England. They have been success
fully raised" in America also. Ideal
Shetlands, according to stud book
rating, are 10 hands high, al
though many mature animals are
nine hands or less. Highland pon
ies, raised extensively in the Shet
land islands, are slightly larger
than the Shetlands.
O
Belief that tdtnatoes will ripen
better if not exposed to the hottest
rays of the sun has been confirm
ed by experiment. Tomatoes, it
was found, get tho reddest when
ripened in a temperature which
does not exceed 86 degree Fahren-
hoi.

RETAIL DEMAND
T
PORTLAND. JulF 20. -(-Local
batter market was fully firm
and appeared duo to close the
week in that position despite the
stoppage, for several days, of some
out-of-state shipments.
A brisk retail demand some
what offset the curtailment of
outgoing business and the surplus
moved into storage. The trade
had a particularly good call for
grade "A" atntf. Prices were held
The egg market was about un
changed, having been firm all
week on top quality. Prices ruled
evenly with those early in the
week.
Cheese rnled about steady and
unchanged.
Local veal market continued to
hold chief interest in country
killed meats. The market was fully
firm at 8 -9c locally and good
calves were scarce.
The tomato deal was in better
position. The trade found a good
demand, following a noticeable
weakness in the market generally
at midweek. Good stuff from The
Dalles brought 65c.
Asparagus was in moderate de
mand and unchanged with earlier
in the week. Most sales on the
limited supply ranged around
$2.75.
Cauliflower was about steady
and unchanged at $1.15.
Demand for sweet corn was
keeping supplies well cleaned out.
The retail movement at present
prices seems to have been satis
factory. The trade quoted gener
ally around $1 on five dozen ears.
Limited offerings of Browns
mead peas moved at 7c.
Peaches and apricots ruled
steady and unchanged.

RAILS, METALS HIT
WS LOW LEVEL
NEW YORK. July iQ.-(JP)-K
wave of ceiling broke a stalemate
in the stock market today and ex
panded the volume of trading to
above a million chares for the
first time since June 8.
The day's stock transfers to
taled 1,237,315 sharej compared
with a daily average recently of
500,000 to 600,000.
Rail shares on the average sold
at a new low level for the year.
Pressure also was relatively heavy
on metals and other groups tat
had benefited from inflationary
sentiment, indicating growing
doubt in speculative quarters over
the prospect of near-future mone
tary expansion of the drastic sort
talked of from time to time.
Among stock suffering losses
of 2 to 4 points were American

Bethlehem Steel. Chesapeake
