Q95 As "stated on Saturday, the above hands were bid 83 follows: Z, 1-No, Trump; A, Double; Y made no bid throughout. To show game probabilities at hearts, pro vided his partner held a strong doubling hand, B bid 3-Hearts. Z passed, but A shifted to 3-Spades. Liking his partner's spades about as well as A liked B's hearts, B ventured a shift of - 4-Diamonds. -The responses made A believe that a small slam might be made, even against a ho-trump showing of ad verse strength and he jumped into 6-Diamonds. The opening lead was Z's A of clubs. Like many another hand where contracting has been pushed, to the limit, the declarer has to proceed with great caution; the play is full of traps for nearly every variation from the one outlined here of B's actual procedure. To enable him to gain club entry to his own hand later on. A's J was ducked under Z's Ace. Rather than open up one of the other suits for B. Z led a second club, which B won with his 10. It appeared more simple to es tablish dummy's spades than to try establishing hearts; accordingly B led his lone spade, and won the rie Slater, Mrs. Lulu Robinson. Mrs. Ida Campbell,. Mrs. Florence Hunter, Mrs. . Jennie Eberting, Norval Gates. Earl Burke, Fred West, and the hosts and hostesses. Wallace Road Mrs. EL C. Moll entertained attractively for the Sweet Briar club at her home Wednesday afternoon. Spring flowers made a pretty background for the social afternoon. Mrs. Jen nie Ferguson assisted at the tea hour. Special guests were Mrs. Lloyd Reynolds, Mrs. Charles Sonsy. Miss Georgianna Briggs and Eleanor Briggs. 'S XjQ ;-2c B Win at Diamonds? trick with a finesse of A's Q.; A low spade was ? returned and trumped. When there are outstanding against you five trumps, there are 68 in 100 chances that the five will be divided 3-2 between op ponents, and B jproceeded to utilize those probabilities. He led his J of diamonds, and was allowed to win the trick. He led his lowest diamond and won the trick wi'.h A's 10. Dummy's lowest spade was led, and trumped by the de clarer, dropping Z's King. : This meant that dummy's A-9 of spades could pick up the missing J, wher ever it lay. Dummy also contained two good clubs and two good dia monds. All the declarer had to do, was to make certain that Z did not in some manner take a trick of I any sort. At the end of the 'seventh trick, of;; which the declaring side had lost only one. B held five un touched hearts, and a' lone club. Looking at all four hands it is easy to see that it would have been per fectly safe had B led a club, but he was not certain that Z held an other card of that suit. It was possible that originally he beld four hearts; if he had false-carded by playing his K of spades when he also held the missing J, Z would trump a club lead. To make absolutely certain. of results, B led his K of hearts, and trumped the trick when Z put up his Ace. Even if the A had not been played, still he would have trumped. An excellent principle of play is never to take any need less risk. The balance of the tricks were claimed without further play, and A-B scored their doubled contract of a small slam.
