Prof. Toble and family are borne from New York, where the professor attended the summer session at Columbia university. .They made the trip in their car. stud encountered all kinds of goads and weather enroute. The Harley Champ home on the Sublimity road has been made most attractive, in fact the house would not be recognized. Mr. Champ has done most of the work himself at odd times. The house has been covered with shakes, be windows changed, porches added and otherwise modernized. It is a splendid example of rhat ran be done to an old house, which is still in a good tate of preservation. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lesley, ruo for a number of years own ed and operated the Stayton hotel save again taken it over and will run it. Mr. and Mrs. W. Belne m&nn, who have had it are leav ing to make their home in Akron, Ohio. While at Klamath Falls with Elmer Rabels for a short vaca tion. -Henry Deidricb had the mis fortune to fall and break his arm. Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Alexander and Mr. and Mrs. O. L. Hagen were in Portland Thursday on business, going down to purchase a new "self feeder" press which Mr. Alexander will use in his job printing office. This office is un doubtedly the best equipped of any office in a town of this size In the state. ' Mr. and Mrs. Leo J. Rock and daughter are now in their new home, which he recenly purchas ed from his mother, Mrs. Lena Kock. He will make extensive improvements on the property. He sold his place on the West Stayton road to John Farmen, of Salem. Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Fish and children of San Francisco were guests at the Glen E. Fox home Labor day. Mr. Fish is represent- lnr the Alderwood Knitting Mills of Portland, a subsidiary of the Jantzen Co., in the bay region. He and Mr. Fox were for many years with Flfcshner-Mayer, of Portland. Walter Bell, Mrs. George H. Mr. and Mrs. Al Brown and daughter, Patey. left Saturday morning on a ten day trip to Cali fornia. They will visit in Modesto and go as far south as Los An geles before returning home. Will Neuns had the misfortune to drop a large stick of wood on his left foot and break two toes. Mr. and Mrs. Merrill fikaug of Portland were recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. P. J Richards. Mr.-and Mrs. P. J. Richards spent Saturday In Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Headrick of Pendleton have been the guests at the R. A. Erixson home- the past week. Mr. Headrick Is a brother of Mrs. Erixson. Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Kelso have been the guests at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Brooke and Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dencer this week. The Kelso's are from Calexico. California. While here Mr. and Mrs. Brooke's took their guests on a trip to the coast. Junior and Mr. and Mrs. Hans Paulsen made a trip over the Roosevelt highway Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Fltzpatrick of Seattle were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. T. Fltzpatrick the latter part of the week. Joseph Fltz patrick is a nephew of T. Fitzoat- jrick. Mr. and Mrs. William Sheridan nd family spent the week end at the beach. R. Hoots had his straw baled a few days ago.. This was sold to a poultry man. ' Mr. and Mrs. W. Flood attend ed the Pendleton round-up. The return trip- was made by way of McKenzle Pass. M, M. Magee of this place and Dale Magee of Croaked Finger made a business trip to Portland Saturday. Miss Veneta La Branch, Miss Leona La Branche, Darold Blanchard, and John Blanchard spent the week end at Toledo and Newport. Mrs. H. McMillln and daugh ter and their guests, Mrs. C. At a meeting of the schooh board this week, it was decided not to hire a teacher In the place of Mrs. Rob Ins, who has recently resigned, until after the opening ot school which is September 29. Mrs. Marshall Is principal again thia year and will teach the upper grades, and Miss McDonald, who taught the fifth and sixth grades last year will have the primary grades. The R. L. Phillips family of Salem have moved into the Dr. Parr home. Mr. Phillips Is an em ployee of the Pep company. Hildred Mason of Portland has been spending a few days at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Mason. Miss Mason came to attend the ' funeral of her cousins who were killed in the accident at Turner. Mrs. William Rickman and Miss Gladys Kearns spent Satur day in Portland where they at tended the wedding of a friend. J. L. Rickman of Siletx spent several days here looking after property interests. Mrs. Bear went to Albany before noon Friday where she would -meet her hus band, F. M. Bear. They wo aid return home that evening. Mr. and .Mrs. O. A. McKay of Turner, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brasher of Salem, spent the last week end In the moun tains, returning Monday evening. Mr. McKay and Mr. Brasher are both rural mail carriers on routes out ot the Salem post office. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Heath ot near Milwaukee, were at the home of Mrs. Heath's parents, Mr. and Mrs. L L. Robertson, Thursday. ' Barbara Roberts went to Sa lem Wednesday tor a few days' visit with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Roberts. A marriage license was issued Wednesday at Vancouver, Wash ington to Frank R. Harris of Portland, and Miss Leona Porter of Turner. Miss Porter's home has always been at Turner. They will live In Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Otis Bates, who live six miles east of Lebanon, were In Turner Sunday meeting old friends. Mr. and Mrs. Baker have charge of the Mo Marr store on 19th and Stata streets. A new site is being put up on the old McKay farm west of town. Fred Mitchell and Robert Schaefer have charge of the place. Mr. and Mrs. E. 8. Prather en tertained Sunday for Mrs. N. H. Hutchens. Madeline Austin and Floyd Hntchens of McMinnvllle, also FVaad Mrs. Bliss Fletcher and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Fletcher of Tillamook. Mr. and Mrs. Eyre and daugh ter, Charlotte, of Salem called on Turner friends Sunday. The family lived at one time four miles south of Turner. Mr. Eyre has a position in the Sa lem post office. Herbert Briggs. whose wife and mother both lost their lives Monday morning on a railroad crossing accident, has given up his work in Portland and will make his home for the present with his ather-ln-law, A. E. Rob ertson, whose wife was one ot the ill fated party Monday. Mrs. Margaret Duncan of Sa lem, called on Turner friends Friday. She plans to spent next week at Newport. Mrs. Duncan was once a resident of the vicin ity of Turner. COACH AT GRANT SILVERTON. Sept. 9 Watt Long, former coach and instruc tor in -the Silver-ton high school, is head football coach of the Grant high school at Portland.
