Prices moved inconclusively until the last half hour, when a reaction set in that carried through to the close, bringing losses of one to six points in a wide assortment of shares. Trad ing, however, was in small vol ume. The break appeared to be tech nical, for the market had been rising without serious interrup tion for nearly three weeks and therefore entitled to a corrective move in the other direction. As measured by the average of 90 issues, stocks lost 1.7 points. The heavy undertone of the earlier hours was replaced by a mild bullish demonstration early In the afternoon. Bethlehem Steel and United Aircraft, rallying i and 2 points, respectively, were prominent in this advance which eliminated the moderate losses of the morning. Bethlehem held two-thirds of its gain, but United Aircraft retained only a fraction ac the close. Only a few stocks lost as much as 4 to 6 points. These includ ed such volatile shares as Case, Diamond Match, American Tobac co "B," Eastman Kodak, Foster Wheeler and Columbian Carbon. I L all WHEAT LOWEST I N C E 1914 NOW HOP PICKING SEASON AT HEIGHT Early Clusters About Finished, Crop is Said Excellent Hop yards in the Willamette valley are centers of activity now with hundreds ot people employed in picking- and drying. Early clusters are -practically all har vested and the crop was reported good in both quality and quantity. Picking of late hops began this week In most yards. The downy mildew made serious inroads in the hop crop and present indica tions are that the crop will be less than the 70,000 bales esti mated. Prune picking was scheduled to start the. last of September but many growers have declared that with the present price they can not afford toarvest their prunes. A few growers are still optimistic and believe that prunes will "come back" so intend to harvest the fruit and hope for sale at a reasonable profit. One grower who has at least 75 tons ot fine prunes says that if the market does not show marked improve ment in the next three weeks he will leave his prunes on the trees. Grain harvest is practically ov er and yields were reported ex cellent In all grains, particularly barley and oats. Local Tomatoes Now Appear on Portland Mart The long-delayed local toma toes appeared in heavy volume on Portland's markets Tuesday morning, as a result of the past few hot days, and the weekend holiday which permitted accum ulation of harvested stocks. To mato prices declined 10 to 15c per box. Volume of trading on the Farmers' Eaat-eide market at 10th and Belmont streets probab ly reached the highest point of the season today. Celery continues in slow de mand, both locally and in carlot movement, is dull. Peas and green corn are firm, with lighter supplies. Watermelons declined to the season's low--l-lc lb. This week marks the peak of Yakima's peach offerings, at Portland. Illahee hop Yard Employs 135 Pickers AUBURN. Sept. 3 The Illahee hop farm is a busy place now, as hop picking began Monday with about 135 pickers. The crop is of an excellent quality. The picking will continue for about two weeks.
