An Editorial by Damon One of the distinguished gentlemen from the Dairy Food commission was in to see us the other day. Se he: "Mr. Da mon, we have a law which compels you to cover the straw berries with glass; and jour sign on the eggs, Mr. Damon, mast have the word 'fresh' on it or you're liable to get ar rested," sez he! Everybody knows that a good housekeeper always puts the berries under the faucet and rinses them be fore serving. The only possible chance for them to be contam inated would be possibly a little algae from the water. Here Is a law that Is Just a lot of hokum made to give some one a job regulating the merchant, sex I! Cover the berries op and they mold! It looks like the legislature would pass a few laws to help the independent merchants instead of harrassing them with these goofy strawberry, egg and smelt laws, in other words, "give the merchant it chance to come up for air!" These fool laws work a hardship on the merchant, in crease the overhead, raise the price to the consumer and per petuate fat jobs in the state house. "It won't be long now" before the berry growers will be compelled to cover the berry patches. The enforcement of such a law when passed would make a good job for the new county agent that they are trying to force on the taxpayers at this time. When is the creation of new bureaus 'and fat jobs in Oregon going to stop? The taxpayers are "all washed up," as it is. The independent merchants of Oregon are going into the next legislature and demand a square deal! Why does the state continually ride the little merchant and play into the hands of the big egg and meat packers? The press takes much merchants' money In the form of advertising, "but not one word do we hear to help him prosper. Wake np, you moulders of nablic opinion! Give ns a hand! The merchants of Oregon de mand a square deal nothing more, nothing less. Let these low prices be an invitation for yon to place your next order at Damon's.
