The trip up the Columbia high way was exciting since the smoke was so dense that It was neces sary to have the lights of the car on even at noon. At Hood River it was as dark as night all day. The electric lights were on and men stood around talking of going to bed. Others spoke of the Judgment day. Burn ed leaves were blown from the north across the river. The Columbia highway must have been a disappointment to tourists because it was impossible to see the river from The Dalles to the Vista House.
