JJttty July 14. John Looney came to America letweea 1701 and 1740. William looney la descended from Joseph tfte youngest of John Looney's 14 u. Four of John Looney'a sons ftmght during the Revolution at Kings Mountain under ; Ben Oeaveland. Some of the family went to " Missouri In an early day. In 1850 William Looney and wife and fire children started to Oregon. They Ifeft the Oregon Trail and went to California, spending the winter of 1350 -II in Sacramento. William looney's mother died and was the first white woman buried there. In the spring of 1851 ; they came to the home of Jesse txon y,,a brother at Jefferson, Oregon. A few. months later William Loon ey was drowned In the Santiam nfcror. His widow Elmira : Mc- lier Looney married Nelson B&nsoa Doty of Rochester, New York. Mr. Doty crossed the plains In 844. settled near Jefferson, starting the first tannery la Ore- tjen. He was a shoemaker and ' saddler by trade. He volunteered - te the Indian wars 1844-49. Had sa moderate success in mining In California where he went after -trie Indian wars. He was the first istic of the peace In southern Bart of Marion county, which po sition he held as long as he would, accept it. It Is on this donation ; land alaim now owned by William E. From Chicago comes the fol lowing information: - ;"Tbe -government gave the four north western states 135,000,000 bush els of bread wheat and 58,000,- 000 bu3hels of durum. The lat ter was short 1 5,0 00,0 00 bushels from last year, and the bread wheat is off 34.000,000 bushels. Montana's crop has fallen down sharply. There are estimates that Jaunlta Smith; R. S'. N. Rear Admiral William A. Moffett and other members of the board, ap pointed to Inspect suitable loca tions for the base, arrived here tonight from Portland. " "; The admiral declared there was no truth in reports that the board was committed to any par ticular site or vicinity declaring all sites. Including a dozen within a fifty mile radius of the city, would be considered before a re port is made to the secretary of the navy. Diphtheria Found In Marion County One case of diphtheria has de veloped in Marlon county, but all persons exposed have been trac ed and immunized and there is little danger of any spread, offi cers of the Marlon county child health demonstration reports. The patient, who lives east of Pratum, contracted the disease at Dundee, in Yamhill county, it was learned. There were estimates of S 7 2.0 00.0 00 bushels for the three western Can adian provinces on June 1st. Can ada's pool estimate Is for about 65 per cent of last year's crop." Agricultural Statistician Kent estimates, the yield - of winter wheat in Oregon at 18.007,000 bushels and spring wheat 2,023, 000 bushels; oats 10,741,000 bushels: corn 2.5(0,000 bushels: as 100,000 bushels; potatoes , 3,000 bushels; all tame hay 1,824,000 tons; apples 0,034.000 bushels; pears 2,387,000 bushels; and peaches 208,000 bushels. Winter wheat, corn, barley, pota toes and pears will exceed the five year average; all the others will be less. The wheat estimate for Washington is 550,000 of winter and 18,430,000 bushels of spring, while Idaho promises' 12,(22,000 bushels of winter and 14,(22,000 bushels of spring wheat. Prune Men Encouraged "Prunes promise a 60,000,000 to (0,000.000 jlrled crop in Ore gon and Clark county. Wash. The crop 'is pretty uneven in some lo calities," says T. L. Kent. In this connection, the Dallas Itemizer Observer says: "With the ap proach of prune -harvest, and the assurance that the price will be at a fairly satisfactory level, and the crop better than In most districts, Dallas should expect a very sat isfactory fall. There Is a more general spirit of optimism than for several years. No people of the country ares mcfe deserving of a good break of fortune than the prune men of the valley after their years of discouragement." The total production of. pota toes In Oregon, this year is fore cast at 6,135,000 bushels. with all Pacific coast production listed as good. The 1928 potato crop In Oregon was 5,240 bushels. As a whole the United States potato crop Is short this year, with a to tal estimate, by the United States department, of agriculture, of 379.000,000 bushels as compared with 4(3.000,000 in 1928. The commercial apple yield of the nation will be lighter this year, with the Oregon yield fore cast at 1,387,000 bushels as com pared with 1,600,000 bushels last year. There is a decrease, shown in most states this year. Pear crops of 1929 are smaller, although the Pacific coast yield is forecast as fair, with Oregon listed as 1,944,000 bushels as compared with 2,700,000 bushels last years It is estimated the Pa cific coast states produce over half the pear crop of the entire United States. .
