Jewelry, and other things where individual choice la necessarily made from -a display ofthe latest styles, face brick Is now shown In all Its bean ty of various colors and textures by means of attractive exhibit rooms especially fitted for the convenience of prospective build ers. "Dealers in face brick have de Teloped means of showing the brick as they appear in the wall. Many employ good-sized portable panels of actual brick; others have built walls of face brick in the exhibit rooms, and some have installed" lighting systems where br the effect of daylight is ob tained at all hours. ', The wide range of distinctive hues In which fac brick Is ot tered starting with beautiful creams, buffs and grays extending through pinks, reds, maroons, greens and browns to gun metal blacks has given the dealer every opportunity to make an art istic and interesting display. Texture in the brick, as well as its'ecflor, plays an important part in giving Individuality and varie ty to house architecture, for the smooth surfaces appeal to some, while the more rugged brick are preferred by others.' The latter continue to be popular and many charming homes are being built, in which the texture .of the brick aids in getting the soft color tones so generally desired. Study has also been given to the color of mortars used to bind the brick together. Since mortar usually makes up about one-seventh of the wall area, the color ehosen for it plays an .important part In the appearance of the fin ished wall. In the exhibits, col- J'red mortar joints are often used, ome accentuating each brick rhile others combine them into the appearance of ft solid mass. Where the exhibits are large enough to show areas of actual I alls, various patterns used in onding are also Illustrated. The past week has seen real progress made on the big con struction jobs which are booked for the summer work of Salem. The excavation work on the new eapitol office bnlldins has been completed. The contract was awarded during the week to R. E. Boatwright of Salem to install the sewer pipe connection for the new building. His bid was $2,430 for clay tile and $2380 for cement tile. The general contract for the edifice win not be awarded for some little time yet. Just soon as the construction contract is let great activity will set in on the eapitol grounds for the job is a half million dollar job. Large crews of workmen will be engaged to Tush the construc tion work through. Excavation work on the new telephone building on State street has been completed. The work of placing the footings for the sup port of the building Is now under way. The material excavated was largely gravel and small boulders, evidently the deposit from the river centuries ago. The contrac tor for the telephone building is L. H. Hoffman of Portland. Good weather has seen the starting of many smaller resi dences in all parts of the city. Others are being contemplated and made ready for tenancy. The building of newer homes has had something of a reactionary effect on the market for older homes, especially those not fully modern. A new store room of hollow tile construtcion is being built near the corner of Twelfth and State, ad joining the building of the Green wood Dairy. Other fronts In the block are being chaired over from frame to face brick, vreatly adding to the appearance 01 i business houses in the block. Telephone Building Permit Puts June oh Right Side of Ledger; Total to Date Large Building activity in Salem emerged definitely in the past week from all association with the "slump' of the last year. Actually, its recovery from this condition, frequently ascrib ed to the "presidential year bogey, occurred shortly after the general election last November; but construction figures didn't match up to actuality. That was because the early months of 1928 witnessed the tag end of the record period which had begun in 1926, and the early months of 1929, affected by unfavorable weath er conditions, failed to match up with the figures for corre sponding months But with the brief gesture of is suing a permit for the Pacific Tel-, ephone and Telegraph company's new home, Building Inspector Bushnetl , definitely put June 1929, on the right side of the led ger in comparison to June, 1928. Jane 1928 Exceeded The single permit for that Item of construction In itself amounted to more than the June 1928 total, which was $116,150, and raised the total for the present month to $149,447, with the month only half gone. That item also makes this month already the heaviest since May, 1928. While it may be ar gued that the issuance ot one big permit is not indicative of gen eral activity. It is equally true that the poVr showing made in many of the preceding months was due principally to a lack of any large projects, the smaller items being as numerous as usual. Last month, for instance, show ed a total only a little more than half that of May, 1928, but more permits were issued. One big building may upset the general av erage for one month, but over a year sach inequalities tend to flat ten out, and with the state office building yet to come, 1929 is cer tain to pass the 1928 total of $1,605,643. REWHniSi llfTO MILADY In these busy days, when the housewife has numerous interests outside the home, it is necessary for the manufacturer of home ap pliances to make his product as free from mechanics! worry as possible without interfering with its efficiency. The busy housewife cannot be expected to remember to oil the i mechanism, yet in most machines it is necessary that this attention be given at regular intervals to prevent serious damage and ex pense. Then, too, there is the in convenience suffered by being temporarily deprived of some much needed household aid. "The General Electric Refrig erator is one that can be plugged in the nearest convenience outlet and actually forgotten, In so far as the mechanics of the machine is concerned," states S. P. Rose of the P. E. P. Co., who is n charge ot General Electric sales locally. "However, the very beautiy of the machine and the perfect service It renders keep3 it from becoming forgotten once it is installed la the kitchen," he continued. "We have had a number of inquiries from women who have seen Gen eral Electric Refrigerators in the homes of their friends. Its ex treme simplicity invariably makes a lasting impression on them and has been the cause of quite a number of the machines being in stalled in homes throughout the t city."
