youth In a ear with a California
license, who had stopped to in
quire the way.
The tourist promised to attend
to the tall light, bnt waited to
chat a bit.
"If yon want any singing or
dancing lessons, I may be able to
give them to yon next time I'm
through here," he said. He was on
his way from Hollywood to Seat
tie. and would be going back to
the celluloid city again soon.
Scott took it all with a grain
of salt nntll he went to the Cap
itol theatre and recognized his
"customer" as Sammy Cohen, rub
ber-legged genius who has been
convulsing- audiences there with
his "talkie" impersonations of Al
Jolsoa and other colorful charac
ters.

VISITS IN SALEM
Dr. E. H. Todd of Taeoma, pres
ident of the College ot Puget
Sound, was in Salem Wednesday
for a meeting with officials of the
Kimball School ot Theology. Dr.
Todd is chairman of the area coun
cil for ministerial training, and
the meeting here was looking to
ward future development of the
summer training courses offered
to ministers. The Rev. C. B. Har
risoa of Portland was also present
for the meeting.
All classes of the summer school
met Wednesday and will continue
on regular schedule until June 22
With the exception of Dr. An
drews' seminar, which meets in
Eaton hall of Willamette univer
sity, classes are held in the Kim
ball building. Visiting- ministers
are being entertained at Lausanne
hall.
Tax Commission
Is Now Organized
Organisation of the new state
tax commission of three members,
created under an act of the 1929
legislature, was perfected at
meeting o f the commissioners
here Wednesday.
Earl Fisher was elected chair
man of the commission and will
have charge of all utility assess
ments. C. V. Galloway will deal
with the equalization of local as
sessments. John H. Carkin will act
as secretary and have charge of
the collection of all tax revenue.
While the law provides that one
member ot the commission shall
act as secretary, the routine du
ties of this position will be as
signed to a subordinate in the de
partment.

The new law became effective
June 4.
Salaries of circuit Judges In
Oregon, under an act of the 1929
legislature, have been computed
by the secretary of state based on
the federal census ot 1920.
The 1929 law fixing the salaries
ot circuit judges provided that in
judicial dutncits having a popu
lation of 30.000 or more they shall
receive SC009 per annum. In dis
tricts having a population of more
than 1S.000 and less than 30.000
the circuit judges shall receive
IS 500 a year. In districts having a
population ot less than 15.000 the
circuit judges shall receive sseoo
per annum.
The action of the secretary of
state In computing the, salaries ot
the circuit judges oa the basis of
the federal census of If 20 was tn
conformity with an opinion of the
attorney general. Officials said tt
was possible that some circuit
Judge may file a suit to hare the
salaries based en the actual pop
ulation of the several districts oa
the date the law became effective
There Is no official census ot the
districts since 1920.
