IE HELD IS NEED "There can be no question, saws "Jim" Watkins and "Bill" Smith of the Smith k Watkins service station "of the need for a super tire. . The acceptance of Kelly Registered balloon has proved it. When this tire first came out a short while ago, I only stocked the size3 used by the high priced cars. That's where I was wrong. "The motorist of today doesn't look upon changing tires on a rainy day as a necessary evil, something as Inescapable as buy ing gas. And this attitude Isn't lazines son his part, it is knowl edge. Although It is easier to switch tires now than in the old days, he knows it i salso unneces sary. "The regular Kelly has earned the reputation of being a remark ably trouble-free tire, so when the Kely Registered Balloon was announced, experienced motorists figured it would be the last word in tire satisfaction. Whatsounded a good dea like a "wild dream" some six months or so ago when it first was an nounced that a "ten million dol lar chain ot highwar-airway bea con towers and ideal villages would be built all the way from Canada to Mexico" is now par tially a reality within six months it will be a dream come true. Eight complete units beacon towers and stations .are already finished of Richfild's monster pro ject, all in Colifornia, and includ ing thecolorf-nl towers on the San Francisco Bay bridge and the stateions at Livermore, Merced, Chualar, Santa Rosa., near San Mateo at the toll-gate, Beaumont, Caplstrano Beach and Palm City on the Mexican border. 3 More Befog Built Three more beacon towers are nightly blazing their crimson neon message into the night for motor ists and fliers and stations are under construction. These are at Paso Robles, Castiac Junction near Los Angeles, and at Imper ial airport in Imperial Taller. And now, with a few sites yet to be obtained in Californiaa. the Richfield Oil company, represent ed by William Cotrel, service sta tion executive, is turning its at tention to construction of eleven towers and stations along the great Pacific highway between the line and the Canadian border. Interesting in the latter con nection is the fact that while the California stations are uniformly ot Spanish architecture, a tribute to the padres who trod El Camlno Heal in the olden-rolden nioneer days of this state, the stations of Washington and Oregon will be of English-Norman architecture, a tribute to the more rugged scenic beauty which is characteristic of the Pacific Northwe3t. But the tall beacon towers, with Tartical neon letters from tip to base and with aviation beacons atop the towers will be identically the same as" in this state When entirely completed, it Is expected that the beacons located approximately 50 miles apart on all major roads, will act as a night light lane for fliers; that aviators traveling north and sonth will, on clear nights, be able always to be in sight of at least one blating sign. And, as far as motorists are concerned, they will always know that jnst ahead within the dis tance of half a tankfui, is a Rich field station, fitted to fill the car ar provide for the comfort ot the motoring traveler. In the case ot each site acquired the company has secured a wide semi-circular tract of land gen erally just outside incorporated cities where, it Is believed, ideal vilages under proper restrictions will grow about the towers. Already, it may be noted, ap plications have been made for leases on hotels, auto supply sta tions, eating houses, and other ad juncts. These are being handled. BRICK PLANT BUST The Hidden Brick company In Vancouver is now emptying 20 men and is turning out 20,000 bricks daily. Production of 1000 cars a day within ten months from the time its first car was manufactured is the record recently established by the Plymouth Motor corporation at Detroit. "This is not only a record for the Plymouth," ac cording to A. Van Der Ze, gen eral sales manager, "but for the entire industry, no other car ever reaching such an enormous pro duction in such a short period of time. "Although every effort Is being made to meet the demand for cars, orders continue to be in excess of production figures." he says. "In the Plymouth plant, which is one of the most modern in the indus try, everything is being done in installing the latest automatic machinery and time and labor saving devices to speed up pro duction In order 40 meet the grow ing demand for the Plymouth. The speed of the assembly lines has been gradually increased until now a complete car is coming off every 30 seconds. "The unusual demand for the Plymouth car is proof of the' fact that the motor buying public is becoming more and more exper ienced in the finer points of au tomobile construction and that U appreciates real quality in a low priced car. ' '" t ...lgig .....1L..Z 1 Look beneath the hood and study the mechanical beauty of the new Ford WHEN you look beneath the hood and study the engine of the new Ford, you will begin to understand how carefully this car is made, and see something, too, of the enduring qual ity that has been built into every part. Even if you know but little about the in side of an automobile and do not want to bother with mechanical details, you will sense the value of this care and this quality and realize that it means a great deal to you in the performance of the car. As an engineer or technical man, you will marvel at the simplicity of design of the new Ford and spend long hours in studying the many improvements embodied in its construction. In the homely, yet expressive words of the man in the shop when he pays his high est tribute to a fine piece of machinery: "It is a sweet mechanical job." There is no better illustration of the care with which the new Ford is built than the close limits of measurement maintained in manufacturing. In die new Ford, for instance, the diam eter of the piston pin is held within three ten-thousandths (.0003) of an inch. An equally dose Emit is followed in die diameter The engine of the mew Ford embodies ttutny new mechmmcd femtmrei. The weight of the aluminum alloy pistons is set at 17 ounces. No piston is permjtted to come under this weight and it must not fbeceed this weight by more than 2 grams. -, . - ' In the piston assemblies, consisting of piston, connecting rod, pin and spring re tainer, the four assemblies in each motor must match in weight within a limit of 31! grams. This means that every piston as sembly must meet the weight of each of the other assemblies in the set within ap proximately of an ounce. The dynamic balance, which insures equal distribution of weight in the throws of the crankshaft, is held within 4 grams. Main and connecting rod bearings on the crankshaft are held within .0003 of an inch. It is, of course, almost beyond imagina tion to conceive of measurements as dose as these. They are achieved only through the use of the finest precision gages in die hands of expert wotlcmen These gages are set by Johansson master gage blocks which are accurate to rae-mil&onth of an inch. Make it a point, therefore, to see the new Ford and arrange for a demonstration. Only when you get behind the wheel can you fully appreciate the alert speed, acceleration, safety and comfort of this great new cat VALLEY MOTOR CO. Center and Liberty Streets Telephone 1995
