1 The New OREGON STATESMAN, Salem, Oregon. Thursday Morning, March 21, 1929 13 HOME PLANNING IS ME NEED Proper Furniture Grouping Requisite to Success of Entire Scheme By HILDA HUNT Almost all rooms of moderate size require at least two separate furniture groupings to preserve the balance. This Is necessitat ed by the location of the windows and fireplace, as well as the dom inating pieces of furniture. Where thre are large windows to a proup, as illustrated, there Is a sppcial need for a well-planned arrangement, or otherwise the gorgeous effect of such windows will be entirely lost, or worse jvt, turned into a barn-like at mosphere. Large window space like this la a decided addition to any room, whether II be in a city or the country. Xot only does it pro vide a delightful outlook, but it is the means of furnishing ade quate daylight, which la at a premium everywhere. The wise decorator hangs very transparent glass curtains directly against the windows so as not to shut out the light, but which, at the same time, discounts any glare that Is equally as harmful as is too lit tie light. 1 In this room we hare thesitaa tion of grouping furniture around the French windows at one end of the room and staging a pleasant scene about the fireplace, which Is directly opposite. - Both - of these two centers are equally Im portant, and so dependent on each other. During the colder months of the year all eyes are necessarily centered in the fireplace. But the desire to he able to look outdoors, either at a storm or sunshine. Is true of the city as well as the country. Informality Is the keynote of this room, with its spacious green denim covered sofa, that Is flank ed by two walnut end tables of interesting shape. Chinese lamps in duplicate are a charming decor ative note, and their light is suf ficient for Illumination and read ing. Matching chairs of the co lonial barrel type are a delight ful addition, not only because of their comfort, but because of j s ; ; their colorful tan and green chints covers which, oddly enough, are not used tor the outside of the chair. A woods brown glased chintz covers the backs and sides of the chair, harmonizing wh, the inner fabric as well as the rest of the color scheme of the room. A tall secretary in walnut adds an air of dignity, while at the same time acting as a nice point in balance between the fireplace at one end of the room and the other. The window of beige silk draperies, you will notice, are drawn well back, so as not to ob struct either the view or the light. At night they can be drawn across the windows to serve as shades. XEW SATIN' SHOWER CUR TAIN'S The moires and rubberized silks in luscious colors have been with us Just long enough to pave the way for still newer and more lux urious fabrics. Bath curtains of waterproofed satfn in the jewel colors are now the latest thing. And when you see the gleaming surface of this new fabric, with its high lights and soft shadows, if you can be loyal to the old equipment then you are strong characters! mm H 'Formal S pri n g Op emn mm HELPING TO MAKE YOURS A HOME TO BE PROUD OF FURNITURE QUALITY IS OF PRE-EMINENT IMPORTANCE Most important of all in the purchase of furniture is its quality.
