THE OREGON STATESMAN, SALEM, OREGON. SATURDAY MORNING, APRIL 21, 1928 I 0 If I 1 5? (1 1 A ! W it 13. r Is, flggfc School Athletes to Compete in Four Separate Contests Today im mmvt n em i With prospects of good weather for today, -the Salem high school athletes will be oat 100 per cent as they will compete In four differ ent athletic events, these being golf, baseball, track and swim ming. The baseball fans are looking forward to their game this after noon at Oxford park where they will meet the University high of Eugene In the first interscholas tic contest of the season, begin ning at 3 o'clock. The Salem high school nine have improved ca'v.Id erably during the past week, brushing up on many of the weak- nesses brought out in its clash j -with the Chemawa nine a week ago in which Salem was handed a 22 to 4 defeat. Coach Luke Gill put his red and black ball tossers through a strenous workout on the Willamette diamond last night, and all is now in readiness for the opening game Ins The Eugene team is considered quite strong this season and it is believed that it will give the local high school a run for its money, although the Salemites are far from weak on the diamond. The probable starting lineup for the Salem high team includes Gamble In the box. Wilson at the receiving end, Beechler covering first. Kitchen guarding second, Wooley at short. Belt on third, Bockey in left field, Lyons in cen ter field and Bowden at right. "Frisco" Edwards will officiate. fa ("J GETTING ClOSEIk ontr MOM DAY ittl At 2 o'clock this afternoon the local high school tracksters will meet with the Sllverton and Inde pendence teams at the state fair- i grounds cinder in the first trian gular meet this season. Salem is doped to win by a safe margin, al though Sllverton is considered strong. Little is known as to the strength of the Independence team but at any rate it is believed that some keen competition will be af forded In many of the events. Last week the Salem high spike men trounced the lpcal Y. M. C. A. track team 67 to 22, and after an other week's practice are showing zeal championship form. Salem high school won the state track championship title last year and prospects look very favorable to repeat the stunt again this season according to Louie Anderson, high school athletic coach. Coach An derson believes that the Salem high team will set a few state rec ords this season as some of the men are showing some real stuff. The following Salem tracksters will compete in the various events 100 yard dash Bonney, Lloyd and F. Smith. 220 yard dash Lloyd, Blaco and Bonney. 440 yard run Blaco, Emmitt, and Barnard. 880 yard run Emmitt, Marrs, and Blaco. Mile run French, Johnson, and Sodaman. Discus throw H. Smith, F. Smith, Godfrid and Blaco. Shot put H. Smith, F. Smith, and Godfrid. Javelin throw F. Smith, Blaco and Barnard. Broad Jump Lloyd, Emmitt, and Cannoy. High Jump F. Smith, Cannoy. and Downs. Pole Vault Perrine, O. Smith and P. Todd. Relay team Bonney. Seigmund Lloyd. Blaco and F. Smith. It is probable that Wayne Smith who injured his ankle a short time ago will not be able to compete in today s meet. Although having a painful injury, Smith is determin ed to enter, unless the coach de mands that he keep out. Wayne is the best miler on the team and much will be depended on him In the mile run this season in the various meets. A golf tourney will be held this morning at the Illihee country club in which the Salem high school golfers will meet the Oregon State varsity teamThe Salem high club swingers have demonstrated some real first class golf ability In otk- BASEBALL STANDINGS PAomo COAST W L Pct.l W L Pet. 8. r. 14 4 .134 Oakland 10 .444 See to. 12 6 .887!
