Dr, McAndrew Declares
Teachers Who Marry
Should Not Be Fired
SPOKANE, April 5. (AP).
A school boy ought to work like a
business man; a teacher's mar
riage should not be a "misdemean
or"; and a kindly chastisement is
a healthy thing.
These were precepts laid down
today by Dr. William McAndrew.
former superintendent of schools
in Chicago, before the 30th annu
al inland-empire educational asso
elation convention. More than
2,000 teachers were registered.
"They say the American home
life is disappearing." McAndrew
declared. "Of course, why
shouldn't it? With school chil
dren having so much school work
to do at home loading the
child down with outside work
When I was a boy, after supper
father got out the pinochle deck
and we all played pinochle.
"But the advanced school today
in which the student works hard
during the school hours and then
shuts up his desk and goes homf
and forgets his school until th
next day. as the man In business
does.
"And who is better fitted to
teach than a woman who in addi
tion to her own knowledge of a
teacher has also that more Inti
mate knowledge of the home?"
At a banquet tonight Dr. Mc
Andrew was presented with a
leather portfolio on behalf of thej
teachers of Spokane. Speakers at
the banquet included Miss Cor
nelia Adair, president of the na
tional education association:
Chancellor M. A. Brannon, of the
University of Montana; Dr, W. H

A. Howard, superintendent of Ore
