schools cannot be excelled, and we

New Bank Not Allowed
A proposal of Jacob, von Well
and 29 other residents of Sheri
dan and vicinity to organize a new
state bank there,' has been reject
ed by A. A. Schramm,4 state super
intendent of banks, according to
announcement , made here Satur
day. It was said that the decision
of the superintendent or nanas
would be appealed to the state
banking board for final considera
tion. The application was denied
tor economic reasons.- The peti
tion for a charter set out that the
80 persons Interested in organizing
the new bank had subscribed tor
60 shares of stock. The new bank
was to have capital and surplus of
325,001). j The proposal to organize
new bank followed a futile at
tempt to reorganize the defunct
Sheridan State bank, which was
closed by order of the state super
intendent of banks on September
23. . .

Judge Hunt's Illness has kept
him from his desk In the county
court for several lmonths. . - His
friends and the public in general
knew of his Illness but heard that
he was gradually Improving and
were all looking forward to seeing
him back on the job within a short
time. Recently the judge became
convinced that his health was not
returning as fast as he expected it
would; and, rather than hold up
the Important business of the
county, decided to step aside and
permit another to fill the post.
Formerly Recorder
John Slegmund, the new Incum
bent, is one ot the best known
men In Marion county. He was
born in Wisconsin December 25
1881. and came to this community
with his 'parents at an early age.
He received a part of his education
at Willamette university. - -
Later - he entered the electrical
business at Jefferson and also was
engaged : In the mercantile busi
ness at Gerrals. - He was elected
