In the lumber industry there Is being achieved a better balance of supply and demand. For several months, some of the larger groups of softwood mills have been cur tailing production, but unfavor able weather in consuming territ ory has resulted in sales falling below expectation. ! Prises have therefore been softening during the last few weeks. Concessions, however, have been made only In cases where the lumber could be shipped at once. - and have not been extended to contracts for fu ture delivery. Figures at which lumber has sold have invplved a loss to the mills, and a number of southern pine manufacturers have recently followed the example of the western producers in tempor arily shutting down their plants. As softwood sales for the first twenty-nine weeks of this year have exceeded the cut by five per cent, there is no serious accumn latlon of unsold lumber at : the mills. Rather it is believed that If fall demand Is as good as it Is expect ed to be. supplies of well seasoned stock may be short. In fact' the recent curtaiment of production Is making it difficult to find some Items in various woods. Lumbermen are generally : op timistic as regards fall trade. Good crops are being harvested in the middle West and South and also in the Far West, and country and small town retail yards are sending in an icreasing volume of inquiry. Stocks of the retailers a2 a rule are low. about two nun dred yards in the Southwest re porting to . the Federal Reserve Bank that their June 1 stocks were five and a half percent less than on the same date last year Some of the Northwest rail- roads have already made extensive preparations for handling large crops. And the American Rail way Association reports that 416, 197 more cars will be required in the third quarter of this year than were called for last year. So it Is evident that the ' carriers have exhausted the surplus of cars that was created by the speeding up of the friekh't movement: during the last year or two, and will soon be buying larger quantities ol car material. I ' ' . . The more Important groups of hardwood consumers have not yet begun to purchase their fall needs. Flooring and millwork plants are perhaps the best buyers at pres ent. Following the furniture shows, immediate results from which were not encouraging. there has been a pick-up-in furni ture buying, and some of the fac tories are beginning to take lum- be. Th automobile Industry is tak Ing fair amounts," as new models are being put on the market Most recent buyers of hardwoods have - sought ' bargains, ' but the mills realize that available stocks are small and will be needed .be fore tbe end of the season, so they are not going far in making con cessions. -;0 ::,t y,'ii ;- :' ; ACROSS THE MISSISSIPPI ' A bridge for the use of highway and rail travel will be built across the Mississippi river at Natchez, and will cost $8,000,000 and be more than two miles in length.- Motor Chat.
