The matter of participation in thia movement by the apple growers of the northwest will be considered at a meeting- in Yakima, Wash., today. This is a movement that,' properly handled, might do a great deal towards rejuvenating and stabilizing the apple industry. The biggest thing that could be done for this industry in the Salem district," for the next ten or a dozen years, would be the building of a number of dryers for apples. - There is an unlim ited market for dried apples in China. Bits For Breakfast V May 21, 1027 'My son.'kepp thy father's commandment, and forsako not the law of thy mother: Hind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them About thy neck. When thou goest, it shall lead thee. Proverbs 6:20-22. CITY BUILT STREETS CHEAPER It is found that city built paved streets are cheaper than fcontract built ones, as the reader will observe from a news 1 article in The Statesman of this morning ? That is; the bids on contract work for this year are higher than the cost of city built streets laet year .And the costs of city built streets this year will be lower than for last year, owing to shorter hauls and smaller pur chase costs for gravel. ; It will be so continually, under the right kind of a super intendent of streets, or department of streets. The obvious thing is a larger equipment for the municipal . construction of paved streets, for it is the duty of the city as a whole1 to make the; cost of streets to individual holders of abutting property as low as possible. For the good of the whole city. . And there are going to be more paved streets to con- struct. More and more. Salem is going to grow ; to grow steadily, through a long term of years. Salem will have 40,000 people, then 50,000, and on up to 100,000, and then have only a fair start in her growth, with the development of her industries on the land, coupled with, her industries in ; the city. ; ;! ', : ' . Municipal street construction is a duty, just as the city ownership of Salem's water system is a duty. It is a duty we pwe to ourselves and the generations to follow us. MORE BRITISH SUGAR FACTORIES Eighteen beet sugar factories will be in operation in England the coming season A doubling of the number in two years and a more than doubling of the acreage in beets, for the older factories have been increased flh7ipacity and sugar beet growing has been . vastly stimulated. , There will likely be nineteen factories in operation this year fn England, as an effort has been carried on for signing tip 12,000 acres of sugar beets to be grown in Somerset, Wiltshire, Devonshire and Dorsetshire, with indications of success, the west of England farmers claiming they can grow mpre tons pf sugar beets to the acre than are produced in other parts of that country, and they are determined to get the advantages of the industry for their section. The British people after the war started out to make theircountry 1 self contained in sugar, by levying tariff rates and offering subsidies about equal to the retail prices of sugar on our Atlantic seaboard, and the prospects are that : they will succeeds . , - "The United States would very soon become self contained in sugar if half the advantages of the English were offered by our congress, in tariff rates alone ; without any subsidies Again, have not our members of congress as. much sense and foresight as the members of the British parliament ? BLOODSTAINED MILLIONS FOR HOSPITALS f i r L. E. HugH, Geneva, describing himself as a Swiss citizen under date of :May 7, ends to The Statesman, and presum ably to other. American newspapers, the following copy of a: letter mailed April 11 to President Hibben of Princeton university, Princeton, N. J.: i "An account which has appeared In the newspapers of the reply which you gare Mr. Mellon concerning the cancellation of war debts Jeada me to submit to you an Idea which occurred to me in seeing a poor man refused admission to the Geneva hospital when in a dying condition simply, because, he had no. money and had the additional misfortune not , to be v a Geneva citizen. , The incident, which has. passed; almost unnoticed, happens hundreds of times all . over, the world. " ' ' "Aa a consequence of the world war the belligerent states owe .you 15 billions dollars. ,. v -''I Your government does not1; wish, by cancelling these debts, to enable the sums due to serve for the creation of new armaments. S Salem gets the Iionn' state con vention for next year. Of course. Salem district goes over the top on her Red Cross flood relief quota. It Is Salem's way. And she will do the same for the additional quota which is expected to be called. "a Of course,. it is the duty of the fnited States government to quickly lay out plans for forever preventing , a recurrence ottfca great Mississippi flood disaster, and. to carry them out as fast as possible, though this will be a tremendous engineering - and re forestation program ; perhaps the greatest ever undertaken in the world's history. But this does not minimize in the least the present duty of Im mediate relief, to which the na tion is responding in characteris tic American style; the Salem dis trict along with practically all the rest throughout the land. . America shows she is, truly American by responding in every ease, the world , over to the first recorded, question of history "Am t hiy brother's keeper?" f ' ' .-1 v s v " r- . sCaUfomia's automobile .regis tration for 126 was 1,600,475.
