LINEN AS CHEAP AS COTTON The Statesman began saying, several years ago, that linen would some day be as cheap as cotton And was hooted at by the experts. The prediction was made because of the American genius for mass production; and the flax pulling machine had been invented andwas working, and many other mechanical device's making" short cuts in producing and manufacturing were on the way. Then .came Henry Ford, with the assertion, based on the experiments of 'his mechanical and chemical engineers, that i'Be would be able to produce flax fiber and yarn for his uses ' ' . . .A 1 1 -cheapenthan the then ruling prices ot cotton imer ana yam, ' .. , M iM .1 X, wx4- Cm oninninrr Ql ftnd MF. rOru pegan U grow nax, aim iie put, in v-weaving machinery. And they will enable the operation of scutching plfciW here with free labor, and go far towards revolutionizing thhax industry. Other mechanical devices are on the way. -v . Now comes the leading flax experts of the world, at Bel fast, one of them connected with a company 1000 years old, the largest in the world in the flax and linen industries, and Dredict that linen is to be as cheap as cotton, because of the i .1 ... t, .? fact that a superior flax has been developed in tne nm m ui , Ireland; as told in an Associated Press cable from Belfast, printed in The Statesman of . Sunday morning, and again referred to in the news column? this morning. It is the J W S flax seed. Had it before the Belfast VM" CABLE COMPLETED New Span Increases Number of Circuits Between Port land and South An Important project which has been under way for" the past two years involving a considerable im provement to the long distance telephone facilities between Port land and San Francisco met with completion with the finishing-this week of work on the toll cable span over the Willamette river ai Wilsonville. according to V . II. Dani-y. manager of the Pacific Tel ephone & Telegraph company. This . . i i j . project increased me nuniucr 01 circuits available between the two cities from 10 to 12. and was at tended with expense whu-h ran ii.to many thousands of dollars. One of the principal problems that is met with in carrying tele phone conversations over long dis tances, accord ingtoa Mr. Dancy, i.s overcoming of linfinoises caused by induction. Induction is a phe nomenon familiar tci all electrical engineers which w simply the creation of electrical currents in vires due to the influence of waves radiated from electrical currents in neighboring wires, thus a high tension wire will radiate waves creating or inducing currents in the telephone wire which tend to interfere with and counteract the comparatively feeble electrical cur rents used in long distance tele phony. In order to offset such in duction it is necessary, nt frequent intervals ranging from C to 500 reet on such long distance circuits to make an arrangement called transposition, reversing and chang ing, the course of the telephonic currents over the wire. The Portlanfl-San Francisco long distance circuits previously vere conducted over the Willam ette river at Wilsonville by means of open wire. In the rearrange ment of these circuits it was found that a transposition would be necessary above the middle of the river which was practically a phys ical impossibility. In order to overcome this difficulty a special cable was manufactured by the Western Electric company for which "loading pots." designed to overcome this difficulty, were pro vided at each end. This cable, together with its attendant "load intr nots" has been installed at Wilsonvill Its installation re cHJri a high degree of care and efficient workmanship, and is an object of pride on the part of plant engineers and workmen in the Ore gon division, according to Mr. Dancy. pressed around them. The court rom was Jammed long before the verdict was announced. Before the case was given to the jury at 5:29 this evening four women had been carried from the room in a dead faint and dozens were beseaching in fading voiees to be permitted to pass through the doors that had been locked when Justice Seudder began his 75 minute charge. Courtroom Jammed All that was held before the spectators as a promise of some thing worth while were the sum mations and tka charge. Hut the crowd came early and celebrities were jammed into comers with nondescripts and the scent of the furs of the actresses was added to the generally fetid air. William Millard. Gray's counsel told in an hour and a half, how Gray had been snared by the, "glistening coils of that serpent woman, that fiend in human guise, Mrs. Snyder." He piotured ! Gray as a man of weakcharacter, held in psychic dominance by a I woman "with a naming passion inside her greed that would stop not even at murder." He indicat ed a manslaughter verdict would be sufficient punishment for Gray. Mrs. Snyder was pictured by liana Wallace, her defender, as a good woman, lured by the wiles that only a corset salesman knew how to use. Gray, he said, taking advantage of her unhappiness at home, led her "deeper and deeper down the path of sin."
