THE OREGON-STATESMAN, SALEM, OREGON ' SUNDAY MORNING. NOVEMBER 2i;i92G Bll CADS POSSESS Smoothness and Quietness ,Gams Widespread Popu- ity for Machines The new smoothness and quiet ness in performance qualities which is saining widespread popu larity for all the new Naah mod els has been made possible by the introduction . in all Nash tars of the . 7-bearlng crankshaft. J - - ', In this connection It is note worthy that Nash makes ' these crankshafts in their-own plants' Thirty-five operations are requir ed and the closest limits of pre cision are rigidly adhered to. a de gree of accuracy which gives them their "machine tool" perfection. This engine design reduces dis tortion in motor action to the very (minimum by holding the crank shaft rigid throughout its entire length. Seven bearings - are' the maximum number of bearings it is practical or even pdEsttfle to use on a six-cylinder, m&tor . crank shaft. This makes certain that the crankshaft is supported" at every necessary point not merely on the ends or at one'or two places hr the middle by sturdy main bear ins. : . This principle counteract the constant downward motion, fn the pistons and connecting rods, a motion incident to every power stroke and produces a. resulting moothneBs which Is characteris tic only of the 7-bearing type of construction. I ; , ' , v For it is the crankshaft which receives the pressure exerted on the pistons and transmits' the power through the propeller shaft and the rear axle to , the rear wheels which propel the car. Absolute smoothness and quiet ness cannot therefore be achieved unless this power which leaves the crankshaft and goes to the fly wheel and other driving member? is absolutely smooth and noise less. Naturally enough, with six con necting Tods ramming down on the crankshaft' with cleasless vig or, such forces would tend to cause deflection of the shaft. De flection would in turn result ' in noisy operation and roughness. Consequently, instead of 'trying to forestall noisy deflections through some other means, Nash engineers have absolutely assured thftfiighest efficiency in the most vijC nlt of the motor, and have safeguarded its regular ' smooth operation by supporting the shaft with seven main bearings. The larger cars failed to make the trip and even while they were running were never able to keep up with the smaller power plant. It is es timated that the cars which won first place also took second and third in a row are capable of a maximum speed of 110 miles an hour. The constructional features of the Whippet motor follow the European type very closely includ ing such features as a high com pression ratio, long piston travel obtained tli rough the use of a long stroke motor, and the inclusion of such- elements of design as a full force feed oiling system, heavy duty water pump and full bond bearings on . the crankshaft, , Consumer credit has aided In maintaining our national prosner- itjr. fn the opinion of Alfred Reeves, general manager of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce, addressing the Kation panles at the Palmer House. There is foolish time buying just as there is foolish cash buy ing. "Making useful purchases on time, and within one's- means, is simply setting up for one's self a program of saving and getting the use" of -the article during the period, of soving." , Mr. Reeves estimated that the annual production of motor ve hicles for the year .at 4,500,900 a new . record. . He . figured that without time-payment facilities a large number of the time purchas ers would have paid cash, but the total automobile business would not have been up to the level of record prosperity, due to the in ertia of people with regard to savins unless a program and me thod is laid out for them. DRIVE WAGED UPON 1 NEEDLESS NOISES ' (Oauosed frvw pars LI y tempting to pass another vehicle, the statement declares: "A" great many drivers are not content with a warning blast or two when they want to pass an other machine. They blow the horn so excessively that.' too often, the man in the machine ahead re gards it as a challenge and re fuses to grant a fair share of the road. Hundreds .61 races on the highway that have been attended by fatal or near-fatal results have been started this way. "Probably the form of horn misuse that has given motorists more of a bad name than any other is at crosswalks. "Although the pedestrian has the right "of way at the intersec tion, thousands of motorists will dash up to the corner and count on a horn signal frightening the pedestrian out of his legal rights. It gives motordom a reputation for selfishness - and discourtesy and the elimination of this form of noise would go an enormous way In healing the breach that exists between car owner and the non motorist."
