The consensus of -opinion was that they ran about as follows: Statesman. Ladd & Bush. G. Stolz. Salem Water Company. Fry's Drug Store. First National Bank.: Patton's Book Store. Capital Business College. Bishop's Clothing Stdre. If this enumeration is correct, there are perhaps only seven lines '. of business only severi people or f inns -sow in business, which , have beeh fn business continuous- iy in Salem longer than the Capi tal Business. College. : The Capital Business College was1 established by A. P. Arm strong, then owner of ; the Port land Business College, i Portland, Oregon, in'the summer of 1889. Its first -principal was E; L. Wiley, who was with the school one year and went from here to Chatta nooga, Tennessee, where he was engaged in business college work for many years. " ' W. I. Staley, the present owner of the school, took charge in the summer of 1890, and has there fore seen thirty-six yeats of con tinuous service in the school bus iness. This school is truly one of Salem's pioneer institutions, of which it is Justly proud.: Thousands of pupils have passed through its courses and gone out to places in the business life of the northwest,: where they may be found today, many of them in charge of, or connected with, some of the largest business institutions In the northwest. POSITIONS SECURED FAB AWAY AND NEAR Oregon Telegraph School Has Fine Standing With the Big Concerns By ALBERT BYERS Young men or young women who have a craving for travel will find in the vocation of telegraph or radio operator an opportunity to satisfy their ambition. Two students of .the Railway Telegraph and Radio Institute, Railway Exchange building, Port land, Oregon, are now operating in Alabama one of . them with the Seaboard Air Line and the other with the Atlantic Coast line. Two other students are now in Florida operating for the Wes tern Union- Telegraph comnany. Opportunities for advancement are numerous, and often these promotions include transfer to far distant fields, even to foreign countries sometimes. Mr. J. G. Stack, the manager of this- school, the only exclusive telegraph school in the northwest, has been training telegraph oper ators since 1903. He is particu larly well qualified for this wprk, for his experience covers a period of 22 years filling posts of great importance in the organizations in which he was employed. He was at various times operator, traffic chief., wire-chief, and chief opera tor for the Western Union Telegraph-company. - For over two years during the war he was chief operator at Fort Riley and Camp Funston. His connection with the prominent railroads of the south, west and middle west rea'ds like a romance, and his appointment as teacher in the Western Union Tel egraph company school at Salina. Kansas, and the State Technical Institute of Pocatello, Idaho, evi dences his ability as an instructor. Though the fact is not general ly known, it is nevertheless claim ed that some of the most promi nent men in the world were once telegraphers. Among them are numbered such celebrities as An drew Carnegie, Frank A. Munsey, the great publisher, Thomas A. Edison, and Richard W. Sears, the founder of Sears, Roebuck and company. Each year a greater num ber of young men and women real ize that the study of law is a fit ting adjunct to ""'any education. Bach year there are those who have postponed this study until they have reached a point in life where they can not drop every thing and go to college. Each year finds many men with the am bition to know the law, but with out the means of acquiring that knowledge at the sacrifice of three or four of the most produc tive years of their life. For these men and women the Northwestern College of Law was created. With in its portals are men with col lege education and financially in dependent who prefer to carry on their professional work in Port land, and men with high school educations, engaged In day em ployment, and learning their law at night. To meet the demands of this varied group the school has or ganized a faculty of twenty-five instructors men who have achiev ed recognition on the bench and at the bar, specialists in their sev eral subjects, and as a result there is an atmosphere of reality about the instruction and the class dis cussions which has elicited the ad miration of men from other schools.
