J IUIACLEAY B SHAW DISTRICTS The Annuaf Tour of the First National Bank of Salem This Year Took in the Waldo Hills Country in Which Diver sified Farming Is Practiced Some Wonderful Chang es for the Better Are Taking Place in That Section 3.00 10.50 9.00 6.00 17.60 6.40 On Jane 18 officials of the First National bank of Salem conducted a very Interesting tour with about 40 farmers, visiting a number of farms in the Shaw and .Macleay districts.: - ' The main interest, on this trip, was in diversified farming, check ing up on the best and most profit able crops, for the section visited. fheysaw results from the use of fime In growing such crops as sweet .clover, alfalfa, corn, etc. On the parts limed in fields of oats and vetch the crop was two tons to Ithe acre heavier than on the portions of fields not limed and the portion of the vetch on one field that had been limed was four . times as heavy as the growth on the other portion. Pakl for In One Crop The farmers explained to the visitors that jta the one crop of vetch and oats, the cost of the lime had been taken cars of in the value of "the Increased yield and " that . the benefits of the liming would last , at least "seven years. They found that a field of sweet clover- of Vi acres had pastured 36 tows for seven weeks, furnish ing the very finest of feed. C. T. Gilbert, on whoso -farm this ex periment was shown, stated that in a week or 10 days of rest the cows would be back on the clover for j two '. weeks. 'rmore, and that about the same schedule would be kept up all summer. The Rieck farm, Gilbert farm, Keene farm and toerf.er farm, all in WaldTHUla"ontry, showed very remarkable dlversifi; cation of . crops ' and tne, most up to date methods. -The tourists saw filbert and walnut orchards with corn and strawberry crops as fill -wrbowinc the complete utiliza tion of aTroiI under cultivation onenne orchaVd pf filberts, only three vears Old. showed the trees well loaded with v nuts this y?ar ' The owner, told the visitors that with the growth his trees now showed, he expected a very profit able yield in two years. "All the farmers on the trip were most enthusiastic over such farm "development, and expressed them selves many times as appreciating the' great Talae of the trip to . them. ' ? A Fuller Report The following is a fuller report of this tour; given by one of the farmers who was with-the crowd miltliir It" . ... - - f Officials Of the First National bank of "Salem on June 18, with farmers, made, as was pronounced ' by, those who attended, one of the molt educational tours tney naa ever' been, on. A year ago the Firit National officials made a tour visiting alfalfa fields. Many had sal 4 that alfalfa could not be grown in the valley. Fields ,that would make better than three tons the' first cutting were seen within six miles of Salem. 'The first trip met with so much success that the bank4 decided this year to make a trip where diversi fied farming was practiced. , , On this, trip the best up to date dairy barns, dairy houses, pure bred and high grade dairy herds and hogs, electric hay unloaders," lime and fertilizer experiments; . sweet clo ver,' alfalfa, strawberries, corn, peppermint, walnut land filbert fields, were seen. v The first stop was made at the F. W. Durbin iaro to view their new barn and electric hay unload er. T This is the farm that produc es the baby milk which is a credit to the city of Salem. - "One may.' wonder' why such a large-farm as the Heicks place can be kept so neat and home-like. The' timed fields showed great Je suits where vetch and clover were grown. The large, new and' tip to otto' dairy barn Is kept as clean as a parlor. Results are obtained here because the four brothers put their shoulders to the wheel with their father, f . vN;'f.-i s The OutsUindlnRtJBvent : ' J, "Without doubt the outstanding event: of the tour was the 10 -acre field of sweet clover with '3S of the mOstQl beautiful i& registered Guernseys grazing thereon most of the time since the early spring: Half of this field was limed 12 year tcgol Srxr years V ago. the whole 1 0 ares . was aga in . limed with two tons to the acre. Next year this will again be Hmed and town to alfalfa.. Thla 40 0-acre farm is owned by C. T. Gilbert and tons. Mr. Gilbert is the best authority on lime in the west. "On the Heary Kcene 60 0-acre farm, operated by his son, Lloyd we saw where they are gradually raising less grain and practicing more diversifying. They have put out a few acres of peppermine, strawberries, corn for their silo, and built a new dairy barn. "After lunch, which was served by the bank at the F. A. Doerfler farm in .the groven they .viewed one of the most beautiful fields of peppermint equipped for irriga tion. The corn planted between the filberts averaged over inches. , "A. M. Doerfler showed his win uing Duroc herd and his 20 acres of walnuts. With the above, his registered Shropshire sheep. Pep per mint and clover make his farm program an Interesting one. "J. J. Doerfler. on his neatly kept farm, gave some interesting data on filberts. A three year old filbert grove with Over 70 trees to the acre promise to produce over three pounds to the tree, and at 22 cents per pound; figure for yourself and see if the nut growing is such a slow maturing one. JH1 grove shows results of care. 'Results of dairying were seen on , the Jim Nichols farm, where wheat was grown last year that produced 65 bushels to the acre und this year the crop promises tc yield "even better. While thers they were filling their silo witfc oats and vetch for their bummei succulent feed, which will last till their corn is ready. . "After luncu, F. A. Doerfler, th bank's farm advisor, gave a fev remarks explaining the work h is doing for the farmers throng! the bank's farm department. W M. Pennington,; dealer in real es late. Salem, in his' talk, said thai he always had a poor opinion o: the Waldo Hills: said he had beet in- most every state in the .Union and the rich corn belt, but now U convinced that this section is at good as any he had ever seen. -"Mr. Snilman. county agent oi Polk ccunty, in his talk, stated that he hoped to be able to eact year attend such a tour, and tha the bank was doing a wonderful piece of work by getting the farm ers'fd exchange ideas and seetnt the newer and more profitable crcps and how to handle them." () THIS WEEK'S SLOGAN DID YOU KNOW That Salem has become the headquar ters and market center for a great cucumber industry; that more cucumbers ought to be raised under glass here, for the local and outside markets; that an increasing acreage is being devoted to the field cultivation of cu cumbers, for pickles; that our pickling works here will grow in size; with additional salting stations at various points; that there is money in the raising of cucumbers here1 either under glass or in the open ; that, in fact, this is the best cucumber country on earth, and only awaits the right men with the right methods to push it further to the front in this field?
