Star Company1 Will Con struct Both Operand Closed Bodies' OAKLAND, June 26. An addi tional expression of confidence in the growing western automobile market is voiced in plans that have become known here to build Star car bodies in an additional Oakland, Cal., ' factory. The addition of a body plant to the present five million -dollar Star car . factory would evolve the' ex penditure of approximately a half million dollars. At the present time, all enclosed Star car bodies are built in the Hayes-Hunt company's eastern factories, and shipped here com plete for assembly into the com plete Star car. The factory here at the present time la building all open car bodies. ! ' It is knows that Norman De- Vaux, vice-president and general manager of the big plant here has always taken a major part In the construction of Star car bodies, and In some cases has made major changes in the bodies of cars de signed for Western motorists. Ac cording to members of the 'Star sales organization it has. 'been De Vaux's personal touch in the Star ar construction that has won for such wide approval in this terri-f tory. ' ; ; The addition of an enclosed body-factory to the present huge ) Star Interests ' in - Oakland would materially raise western payrolls. The company already has suffici ent land adjacent to the Star fac tory on which to build the plant under discussion. CLEKESS CHEAP IEN RESULTS SEEfJ 1 Paige Factory's Constant Clean-up Campaign . Is Cutting expenses What price Cleanliness? v The? Paige-Detroit -Motor Car company spends SIOO.OOO a year Just to keep its plant clean, yet considers It cheap at the ' price. Before it Installed special equip ment and arranged" the present elaborate clean-up system,' ". the cost was higher but it was 'fig ured in production totals, injuries to workers,' faulty workmanship, and damaged parts. With the in creased expenditure for cleanliness final costs were reduced,- so that the purchaser of a Paige or a Jew ett not 'only gets a better car, but saves on the purchase price. The effects of constant clean ing are not only physical, but psy chological. In a clean plant," the workers naturally do clean work and turn out clean Jobs. s Few .kitchens are kept cleaner or watched more carefully than the mammoth plant . In which Paigrea and Jewetts are construct ed. Everything is ship-shape, Before the Paige plant operated on its present system, time had to be allowed for the workers to sweep up around their machines every so often, as steel chips or shavings or other waste accumu lated. Now, guards have been in stalled on all the grinding and boring machines, so thatthe chips and shavings leave the machine through chutes, to be collected in receptacles. One worker making regular rounds, empties the re ceptacles, and this one man now does the work formerly requir ing five men. , Twice a day, the cement floors of the wide isles through the fac tory are scrubbed with soap and water. In one department, cleanliness is carried out to the extent of bar ring every one but the operators of the machinery, even factory of ficials and executives - being re fused admittance. This is the great enclosed . enamelling; department. Filtered and "washed air' circulates through the immense chamber containing . the $ conveyors . 5 and ovensR .through which thousands of metal parts pass, hourly. Un fortunately, this Interesting oper ation cannot be exhibited ; to visi tors, for. if only one man walks through, the lint from his clothes and dust from , his sole-leather mars the works :.
