' Trodnot Com Abroad - fc " The flax for the Stratford plan! to grown In that part of Ontario, and the. fiber nroducf is shinned to the spinners abroad.' in ; the great Belfast and other! tnanutac- land saw many letters ! from the greatest spinners in the world, pronouncing the product good; as good as flax retted and dried in the old way, What will be done about it? That is a question of the future. The machinery is made in London. It Is expensive. How' expensive will be learned by correspondence. It may be too costly for Installa tion here at the penitentiary plant, without asking the legisla ture for a special appropriation. But its installation here- would immensely increase the all the year around output of the pen! ten tiary plant. There would not have to be apy waiting for dry weather in the summer; time' for retting, or wet weainer in me rainy season for scutching'. ' 1 Another thing. The fiber re covered by the French process is 22 per cent of long line fiber, and 9 per cent of tow. At the peni tenthiry plant it is 10 per cent of long line fiber and "10 "per cent of tow. The difference of recov ery,' and especially of long line fiber, with as extensive operations as we have here, would very soon pay for a vry xpnsiv installation. Also a Tow Mat nine Mr. Quinland saw the tow ma chine working in the Ford plants a machine invented by the Ford people. This machine takes the cut straw and extracts th gpin ning .tow from , it mechanically, without either retting,, drying or scuicning, He also stfW 'at Seafofth. On tario, 25 miles front Stratford, a spinning tow extracting -machine, similar , to the Ford, machine, but invented and manufactured in Hungary. This machine takes the loose straw and extracts the spin ning tow from it, automatically, at the rate of 100 pounds an hour. This machine costs only about $6000, and it would immensely in crease the-tfficlency of the pent tentiary plant. The tow is ot a fine quality, resembling dew ret ted flax fiber.
