BERX.IK The family library of
the' Ilohenzollerhs, comprising
about 100,000 volumes. bpides
numerous mapt. musical publica
tions and sketches, forms part of
the Hohenzollem inventory claim
ed by the German- republic as
being the property of the state.
Pending the ultimatea decision
of, the courts, the library remains
in-th former Royal castle at
Berlin. , The library was. founded
September 20. 1862, when the
private librarie of Frederic the
Great. Kings Frederic Williams
II, III and IV, and the small but
valuable personal library of Queen
Louise of Prussia, were incorpor
ated. " Prior to that date these
various libraries were kept at dif

founding a library of the Hobfcn

approval of the treasure of the
royal household and it was not
until 1862 that his successor. Dr.
Dohmo. overcame this opposition.
By 1871 the new library con
tained 10.000 volumes. At the
suggestion of Emperor William I,
a Buber of contributions from the
library were made to other lib--raries.
From 1880 to 188& the Ilohen
zollern library 'was steadily en
larged, rearranged and - recata-

Kmperor William II, and the new
librarian, Walter Robert Tornow,
it was given an entirely, new lease.
By an. imperial edict in 1885 a
large number of smaller, family
libraries scattered among the
