" COG? 4ir-? - "' m Innocence There Are Four Distinct De partments in Manufac ture of Machines There are more automobes in America today than there are telephones. In the operation of an automo bile, four complete manufacturing processes must be carried on while traveling at the rate of an average of 10.000 miles a year, often as much as 40 and 50 miles an hour. And all four processes are usually operated by persons kinfamiliar with any of, them. The four are: A complete electrical plant manufacturing, distributing and controlling electric power- A gas plant, taking raw fuel of varying temperatures and trans muting it almost instantaneously into the highest grade fuel gas in the world, and burning it. A power plant, takrng from the combustion of -the gas, power for the operation of ajl.the rest'of the equipment and, carrying it over hills, through sand and mud; one moment, running easily, the n,eiu called upon for its utmost cap acity. A transportation equipment more complicated than that of any railroad, carrying an average of two human lives over every mile traveled; with no set time sched ule allowing, conservation, of. equipment? but, constantly chang ing from fast to slow, with heavy hauls and coasting, over no smooth track, but with constant turning. And one might add the conden sation plant 6f. the radiator, the storage plant of the battery, the power transmission plant of the gear set. ' Because all these are operated by persons in the main wholly-1 un familiar ..with them, each of the plants mentioned must be self substalning; must perform its, task without constant attention from the operator. When one considers the skilled operators Which, fixed plants must have engineers and oilers, elec tricians and distillers; and when one considers that, these other plants are on solid foundation r having regular and well-defined loads governed carefully by skilled men, the War: tnaxrel;! that a.n automobile, under its handicaps, keeps running at alL '- " Yet, more than 70.,00p.un8killed. men were turned loose last year on American cars, to work as "mechanics" In keeping these cars tuned up or ; repaired. Not only has the shipment rec ord to date this year beaten that of 192r but it also is approxi mately 3.000 automobiles ahead of the shipping record for fhe same period of 1923, the best year in the history of Willys-Overland. Production for this period in 1923 totalled 194,364 Overlands .and Willys-Knights. . Coincident with the unusual activity marking shipment records at Willy-Overland is the fact that twice during the fall months boat shipments on the Great Lakes established new shipping -marks for this type of freight, while several trainloads to such points as Chicago, Decatur and the two southern points Miami and Mem phis have further contributed to Wfllys-Overland's unusual ship ment records. In addition, an ex traordinary shipment activity has marked the endurance of the Wil lys Derby, national sales contest in which more tban .10,000 mem bers of Willys-Qverland's field or ganization were entered. This contest closed on November 30, but the factory has noted an ur gent Christmas demand among prospective owners and dealers which is reflecting Itself in the dearth of orders now on hand.
