It was a battle between three old timers and, while no records were made, it showed the great strides the au tomotive industry has made In vesa man a quarter of a century. The race was won by a 1902 Olds mobile, which bested two other makes of about the same age. At times the Olds dashed along at a rate of fully 15 miles an hour. Small boys were carried in the "racers, 'either as ballast or to help push, if necessary. The uni que contest was staged by-'Lcsllc It. Lumley, Huntington Tarlt Oldsmobile dealer. Also on Bering Island, one of the rookeries where the seal gath er yearly undef government guard, there is a salmon stream, up which large numbers of salmon go every year. The fur seal herds have shown no disposition to interfere with them. Furthermore, in the stomachs of 273 seal qpened for examination, salmon was found in but 18. The main article of seal diet is the squid, the montuary inspec tions indicated, and the depart ment says it" "still remains np proven" that the seal herds have any appreciable effect on the great runs of salmon which annually en ter the streams of Alaska'.
