Better than a Cook's tour, more

Such is one of the pleasures to
be extracted from a visit to the
Oregon theater today -when ""We

locally. .
.Other pleasures whifh will
fcnake the gorgeous background

star. Colleen Moore, heading what
lias been described as an ideally

Famous Actress Outdoes
Self in Originality in "The
Merry Widow" ;
Mae Murray and originality are
synonymous in the minds -of mo
tion picture theatregoers, who look
forward with unusual interest to
each new picture in which the
bizarre little actress appears.
And Miss Murray always keeps
faith.
Bot in "The Merry 'Widow," the
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer picture to
be shown at th, HeUig theatre
starting today, Miss Murray's
touch of originality. Is expressed
in a totally different way. To be
sure, it is evident in the costumes,
her method of expression and
dances just as surely as before,
but it is also exerted in the char
acter she creates as well. The role
of the pert little chorus girl who
arrives in Monteblanco as one of
the members of a stranded theatri
cal troupe, and in staying her i
becomes the richest woman in
Europe, and in the end the Queen
of the Country, gives Miss Murray
the best opportunity of her career,
which she grasps to its fullest ex
tent. As well as the dashing, flashing
creature theatregoers love so veil,
a new figure of heartfelt appeal
appears in Mias Murray's portrayal
eXUhe title role. . For all. of Jit
bizarre quality sheohas more hu
man appeal than' In some of her
past pictures. The naturalness of
the story, even with 'all "its color
and glamor, makes toer eharacteri
zation pn-11 a little harder on the
heart strings. In portraying the
difficult role Miss Murray affords
theatregoers a new insight into her
histtinic ability.
"The Merry Widow" was direct
ed by Erich von Stroheim for
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The noted
director mad the adaptation and
prepared the scenario with Ben
jamin Glazer from the famous
stage play by Victor Leon Stein
andFranz Lehar.
The prominent members of the
significant cast include John Gil
bert as Prince Danilo, Roy D'Arcy,
Tully Marshall, George Fawcett.
Josephine Crowell Jlale Fuller,
Sydney Bracey, and many others.
After seeing Xita Naldi vamping
her way through "Cobra." Valen
tino's latest release, we wondered
how long the producers will con
tinue to give her siren parts. Nita

fused a contract that called for
such characterization; Barbara La
Marr has demanded a change of
type. One of thes.e days we won't
be surprised to hear that Miss
Naldi has rebelled and is seeking
a picture in which her past will
be a pale lavender instead of a
deep purple. Granted she is suit
ed to playing seductive roles, but
the public is getting tired of see
ing thoroughly bad women on the
screen. They like them just
naughty enough to be interesting.

The girls at the J. L. Parrish

During the lunch hour ltseir,'
eight girls from outside the 9th

a definite plan so that the dishes
will balance with each other.- The
aim of the cooking department is
not only to teach the girls how to

Each day between 75 and 85
students and teachers are fed by

the teachers have taken to eating
at the cafeteria, and many of the
students eat there, although the
majority of them, living within

their lunches at home. Some pa

thev are allowed to charge their
meals, and the bill is sent to their
parents at the end of each month
It is not the purpose of the de

meals, but merely to break even
on the cost of the food stuffs with
a little left over for the purchas

soup is only 5c, sandwiches 2c

each. In spite of these low prices
the department more than breaks

school year had a profit of $43.41.
This money has been placed into a
sinking fund for the purpose of
purchasing new equipment and it
Is the hope of the department to
clear enough each year to keep
the equipment up to modern.
