Cbapin, vice-president of the National Au tomoblle Chamber of Commerce, returned' this week from the pther side where he' was a delegate to ' the International Chamber of Commerce Congress at Brusoells ' While aware of the ancient ri valries and the racial differences which have breeded trouble in Eu rope for centuries, Mr. Chapin pointed out that it no time ia his tory has individual transportation been bo readily available for the private cltlseu as it is today. ' In 1914 the automobile in Europe . was exclusively the vehicle of the arery wealthy and while that re mains true to some extent today, et more and more motor trans portation is becoming available to those of limited means. , '"An easy movement of people across . international borders breaks down misunderstanding, be tween countries," said Mr. Chapin in his Brussels address, .which summarized his views on this. sub ject. "This national' or interna tional flow has a great; economic influence, since it increases trade rand lessens the friction which oft en occurs where peoples do not know each other. I am safe in saying- that with a wider use of mo tor travel by the: peoples of the world and the friendly contracts that come about thereby, there are few things' that can better pro mote International peace. . t "A significant : fact Is that" in .many of the less developed coun tries, highway transport Is far outstripping- railroad transportation in' the carriage of goods and peo ple. It is my belief that many of -these countries will place most of their short-haul traffic upon th fhigh Ways, leaving the long haul to "the railroad lines 1 which will be built.-, Thus once more In history the highways become great arte- ife of commerce to serve more exi leditionnly and efficiently tbanjn olden times.
