'QUICK RESULTS WH SHOULD IPS BE PICKED IS TOPIC That Is, at' What Stage of Maturity Should They Be Taken From Vines At just what stage of maturity hops are best picked has not been very . clear to Oregon growers in at least some of the larger , com mercial yards. Some buyers have preferred the produce ' picked rather green, while others have insisted on thorough ripeness This difference in demand has tended to confuse . erowers who depend on th!e general market. To help meet thie situation, the Ore gon s Agricultural college experi ment station several years ago conducted some extensive expert ments to determine at. what stage the s hop exhibits the greatest amount of valuable constituent soft bitter resin. This resin gives to hops their greatest value for most uses, but does not take the place of entire market values as the aroma, car ried- in a very .Email content of volatile oil, "is a factor in demand and price". A steady Increase in the amount of the soft bitter resin is shown right up to maturity. -Specimens picked later than this began to show decline in, bitter resin. The amount carried by the specimens used ixL the tests varied from 10.39fcer cent in specimens pick ed August- 11, up to- 20.57 per cent in "specimens picked Septem ber, 19. It is thus shown that those of later and more mature pickings' were nearly twice as, valuable jin this constituent as the early specimens. Specimens pickl ed one week later September 26 -ran only 10 hundredths of one per cent; higher 20.67. The fol lowing list shows the results of the experiment in total soft resins: 1 Angust 11, small cones, 10.39 per cent; same date, larger conesj 12.20; August 16. 14.07; August 21, 15; August 26, 16.24; August 31. 16.48; September 5, 18.39; September 11, 20,48; September 19, 20.57; and September 26, 20.67. 1 While the percentage of soft resins was steadily running up with advancing maturity, that of another element, wax, varied ir regularly but on the whole de clined from .52 per cent to .33 per cent. . . It thus seems what to the extent WHEN YOU BUY DRAIN TILE V ' . .' - -V- -I ' Consider the extra strength of concrete drain tile, made uni formly good to pay you,a profit on drainage for a lifetime.
