Vice-President Dawes' spectac ular attack on one-man marathon talking events in the senate, and the more recent eight-hour speech of Senator Copeland of New York against the Isle of Pines treaty, has led capital attaches to dig up noted instances of lengthy sena torial addresses, j ' ; - . ! The unofficial rjecord is held ly Senator La Folletie of Wisconsin. Speaking on a currency "measure, on May 29. 1908, he held the floor or 18 hours and 20 minutes. ! A 15-hour speech is credited to Senator Falkner of West Virginia, on January 16,1891, when the Force bill was - under discussion. Senator Allen of Nebraska on Oc tober 11-12, 1893,engaged the at tention of the senate for 14 hours ol the repeal of !the silver bill; and a similar period was consum ed by Senator Carper of .Montana on March 2-3, 1901. while discuss ing a rivers, and harbors measure. Senator .; Jones, republican, Wash ington, made, a 13-hour speech on February 8-10, 1915, during con sideration of the ship purchase bill; Senator Burton of Ohio spoke for 12 hours and 10 minutes on a rivers and harbors bill on Septem ber 18-19. 1914;; an( Senator Smoot of Utah is credited with a speech extending 11 hours and 35 minutes on July 22, 1913, when the Underwood tariff measure was under debate. I The chamber at the other end of the capitol can lay claim to no such, prolonged oratorical efforts. House rules prelude any lengthy address by one man, v the longest being two or two and a half hours, when the chairman of. a commit tee in charge of a major bill, is explaining its provisions. . The, elapsed time counted as the measureTofa senate speech is not always occupied j entirely with speaking." Frequently the speaker is inte'rupted by questions or quor um calls, which give a. breathing space. The strict rule is that jln order to keep the floor a senator must speak from his desk and' re main standing, but' various presid ing officers have Countenanced a liberal interpretation of this and permitted senators to walk about the chamber or rest on the arm of their chair, i . Senator Copeland, when he held the floor for eight hours, recently, drank In the course of his speech, two glasses of milk ,in which eggs were beaten up, a bowl of soup, and much water, j . ; American Relief Sought i ! For Good Marksmanship , STOCKHOLM, April 11. S wed lsh markesmen, profiting by their observation of American method in the 1924 Olympic Games, and by their knowledge of American rifles, which they tried out on several occasions, havn decided to Import a number of . American sporting weapons and a quantity of American powder. While a high standard of excellence has been obtained in Sweden throuKh the use of Swedish army rifles, u 6.5 Mauser, they are convinced that the weapons used by the Uni ted States entries in the Olympic Games gave better results. Rifle shooting has become in creasingly popular in this country, and volunteer sharpshooters now number mor4 than 30,000. The government encourages the sport, and recently a substantial sum by way of encouragement.
