An experimental dam, to be .built at a cost" of $60,000, only to be de stroyed to test the latest engineer ing theories 3n relation to the con stant angle irch type-, will be con structed soon on Stevenson Creek, a tributary of the San Joaquin river, northj of here. Funds for the work have been provided joint ly by Los Angeles county and pri vate interesst. r ' The object of the experiment is to obtain data expected to prove of great value in the construction of dams in the Los Angeles county flood . control program, in which approximately 235,000,000 will be spent. On several of these, pro jects the use of the constant an gle arch type is anticipated. v It is the theory o many engin eers that the constant angle arch type will permit the use ot thinner construction than has been tried heretofore. ; If true, this would materially reduce the cost of dams. The experimental dam will be 140 feet long and 60 feet hlg'i when the first tests are made. Special instruments will be insert ed In the concrete to test stresses. deflections and temperature changes as the load of water is in creased. Aftfefc this information i3 obtained, the height of the arch will be run up to 100 feet. The water then will be allowed to rise to the point at which the dam ma he pushed out o position, thus es tablishing the ultimate resistanct of this type of construction. - Mental Tests Are Given To Public School Youths i Of 123 papils ow the Salem pub lic schools,! 61 fell below a grade of 80 per cent in mental test3 con ducted by E. A. Miller, principal of the Grant school. A total of 39 girls and 84 boys were given the examination, according to the report filed with George W. Hug. city superintendent" of schools. During the past three years, the students in the school in the south part of Salem have been given in telligence tests and many of them re-classified in their class work. As a result, the taxpayer has been saved considerable sums of money, and the pupils given better teach ing by the new methods employed. Statement of Ownership, Management, Circulation.
