ICE CREAM Bold Everywhere Buttercup Ice PRODUCTS" SILAGE FOR STEERS AND SHEEP (Cpntinned from page 7) alone ration. The silaffe fed steers not only made better gains but also put on a better finish and were more desirable market cattle in the end than those fed on hay alone. This test showed that each pound of silage feed reduced "the hay eaten one-half a pound. The daily , cost per head on the steers fed on hay alone was 13 14 cents and on those fed hay and silage the cost was 15 2-3 cents, or $2. 78 more for the 120 day feeding per iod. However, the difference in gain more than offset this. In put- ins these results in terms of re turn for feed. Professor E.-L. Pot ter, head of the Oregon Agricultur al college department of animal husbandry, says, "A 1000-pound steer costing 7 cents, fed for 120 days on hay alone and sold for 8 cents would return $7.63 a; ton for the hay after paying all expenses including labor and interest. Un der similar conditions a steer fed hay and silage'would return $8.73 ra ton for hay and $6.5S for the sil age. The silage fed steer, how ever., would be a hetter steer, than the hay fed steer and if the hay fed steer brought" 8 cents the silage hay fed steer would bring a quar ter more, in which case he would return $IM4 a ton for the hay and $7.57 fori the silage- These fig ures apply to two-year-old steers." Corm or peas and bald barley hsilage gave best results in fatten ing. Sunflowers as a rule are not rated at more than 80 per cent as valuable as corn for .fattening pur poses. Silage for fattening lambs has not increased daily gains very ma terially. In a test at Union 1229 pounds of peas and bald barley sil age replaced a ton of hay, but the addition of silage did not material ly increase the gains. It was shown ;n this test that this silage was 61 -or cent as valuable as hay. Sun flower silage was found to be 4 3 -or cent as valuable as hay. ,J Many of our Oregon sheep rais es feed silage to the ewes around lambing time. They believe succu 'ent feed at that time is a great aid ir increasing the milk flow. From me tq two pounds a day is the ra tion fed. As more is learned concerning -iiape production costs, it will be n.isicr fo determine its place in the jli.-iy pjloducing areas.
