Reason for Violent Fluctua
tion of Prices Is Demand
ed By Department
WASHINGTON, March 1 8.
The department of agriculture
moved today to ascertain the rea
son for the recent violent fluctu
ations of . the market prices of
grains, particularly wheat. ..
In announcement which express
ed "concern over the situation.
Secretary Jardine directed the
gra'n futures administration to
make an immediate investigation
of conditions existing in grain fu
tures exchanges.
While plans for the Inquiry
were developing at the depart
ment it was apparent that for a
time at least the investigation
would be conducted from Wash
ington and Chicago. J. W. T. Du-
vel In charge of the grain futures
administration since the retire
ment of Chester Morrill last week
is expected to take charge of the
inquiry at Chicago where he has
been head of the administration
office. Officials charged with reg
udatory work of the department
meanwhile are working out the in
vestigation's . course here.
There was no indication as to
the method of procedure, it be
ing stated only that the inquiry
would be in accordance with pro
visions of the grain futures, act
which imposes a, large number of
regulations to govern trading in
futures and provides penalties for
violation, ranging from suspen
sions of trading privileges to fine
of $10,000 or one, year's impris
onment. '
