What: we want to lernphasize Is the general idea, and those whose general Ideas trend - of mind, or line of thought is republican should be admitted to the repub lican party. Those who by nature are Insurgents, noflronformist4 can continue to be Independents. They are , not democrats, , they would disturb the democratic par ty. It was detect ed in an effort made to put some thing over on 'the primary election laW,. and- as usual f on being de tected it has begun abusing the fair-minded and forward-looking republicans. The Mills bill was so thinly dis guised . that its , purpose ahowed through the veneer of sugar-coating and was promptly exposed. It is the biggest farce ever -proposed to intelligent people, and it is in conceivable how' a man with the rntelligea.ee of rjlaade ' Ingalls could so far forget hia good udg meht as to advocate a measure of that - kind.. .Claude Ingalls . is an Old .Kansas', politician, ' and he kndws that in, that state under the system that he would re-tit, the politicians had candidates from every county and; the people had no more of a look-in than If they had been so many rabSltsf. ' The result wai reaction against this nefarious practice., ; The , plan; to bring .this back into Oregon; was properly y detected , and exposed, and as usual ia such eases, those who were exposed are spending their timer berating the people who want aa honest primary. KTND HEARTS It is true that the world fs still sympathetic. WTith all the hard ness of our busineae education, we. ere pntttng ia the softening process of human feelings always. ' It is easy enough t0 kill off the. wild animals and shut Our eyes to their suffering, but that is not being done. Money Is being spent and labor 'expended for tb purpose of feeding these animals that they may have their chance of life. sPEmorkcJ up ''The talk of an extra session of tlie legislathre Is 5 premature. The freightrate from Salem to San Francisco is 35 c per cwt, and as Oregon po tatoes do not command a higher price than California potatoes, the southern potatoes hare an ad vantage over ours Which some times means the difference be tween profit and loss. Potatoes on Xiake X&btsh On new beaverdam ground po tatoes are a life saver. The first year after the land is cleared; it is too raw to grow onions of celery,, but potatoes do very well. They keep the weeds down and are very, good for the soil.
