QUALITY WALNUTS ; HAVE NO COMPETITION l (Continued from page S) records have been made with seed ling trees it is generally accepted that the grafted tree is best for commercial purposes las it will produce; profitable crops much earlier than the seedlings. The best success! seems to be with trees grafted on black walnut root stocks. The grafted trees cost more money but bring earlier returns.' - j Much loss and disappointment has been experienced in the past by nurserymen selling inferior trees not true to name, grafted from ' inferior stock and other causes which practically wasted the - time and money; spent V trying to produce . the orchard. It is a serious matter to discover after eight or ten years that you selected the wrong kind of tree or get inferior stock. BARBER) f Oregon responds most generous ly to . every . form of industrial activity in her midst. Her soil yields generous harvests to the farmers. Her industrial and com mercial fields yield equally as gen erous returns to productive energy and activity when exercised by those skilled ' in the arts and in dustries. When'such activities are directed by men of high purpose, determination and the ability to persistently moves towards f inde pendence in their affairs, Oregon extends a most willing and help ful hand. : Leo, H. Johnson can personally testify to the response given his effort to establish himself in a small independent business. A year &y he opened his electric store and, shop at 1011 North Commercial street. His cash cap ital was small but his assets in energy,'- skill at his trade, and business ability were large enough to more than balance the small bank account. During the year he secured contracts for the elec trical work on the New Salem Hotel, the Court Street Christian church, the Unitarian church and the Hayesville school. In addi tion to these he has established a local business at the store which holds' bright prospects, ,for the future. Mr. Johnson has no reg rets for having cut loose from a salary and launched into a small independent business of his own. The age at which a tree begins bearing depend largely upon the adaptability of the soil and other conditions and the care taken. Generally grafted trees will pay for their cultivation the fourth to sixth year, and at seven years will bear profitable crops. No one knows how long a walnut tree will bear. France has orchards three hundred years old. A ten year old orchard of grafted trees will bear' 1000 to 1500 pounds to the acre. There are records of such bearing as much as a ton to the acre. The owner of a ten year old Oregon walnut orchards is cer tain of an income of $300 to $500 per acre for the balance of his life and the livesof jnany succed ing generations of his children. It is an endowment that is per petual.' ' . - :". i - ' ' t 'i rapidly gravitating to Oregon because of tne marvelously f avprable conditions and prodigality of resources. PRODUCTS" SALEM APPRECIATES A LOCAL INDUSTRY Roberts Furnace Stands Test of Ten Years Hard Service ir Homes J (By EDWARD T. BARBER) j The heating problem is always with us. Many attempts 'have been made to evolve a furnace which will produce the maximum results with the minimum of fuel. While perfection may not have been reached along these lines, the Roberts furnace, made, by C. A. Roberts. 1011-South Commercial street Salem, is a long step in the right direction. ., Mr. Roberts is a deep students of heating prob lems and this furnace is an ex pression of his best thought and study for ten years. . His j first furnaces were installed in Salem homes ten years ago, and today are still doing as good service as when first installed. This ; is pretty good proof of the correct ness of the ideas involved. It is a hot air furnace. ) The combustion chamber is so design ed that almost perfect combjistion takes place. Every portion of the surface is equally heated, no cold fronts and hot backs. The fire box feeds the fuel to a central point jat all times, thus economiz ing fuel. . The heat and smoke are conducted through a "radia tor" which presents a vefyj large surface to the air current.) The furnace burns either wood or coal and the drafts .'are so made that the air feeding the fire is warmed before entering the fire boxj The furnace is made so as to practi cally eliminate all "kick back'! of smoke when opening the door to put in fuel, Every point of extra service is protected with the thought of extending the life of the furnace. The parts of the grate and fire box are intefchan geable so that repairs are easily made and every part is easily re moved. Convenience and ecdnomy stand out as prominent features of the furnace and Salem indica tes its appreciation of the furnace by keeping the small shop busy all the time. Mr. Roberts, In addition jto his furnace business, Is In great ! de mand as a sheet metal Worker specializing on gutter worki Any one Interested in either of his lines, the furnace or the gut ter work, will be well repaid by a visit to his shop and haying a talk with Mr. Roberts, who! is fuil of furnace wisdom.- I i WHEN YOJpUY DRAIN TILE i Consider the extra strength ot concrete drain tile, made uni formly good to pay you a profit on drainage for a lifetime. No Cause for Alarm 1 Con cerning Fowl Plaeue hat Afflicted the East That the shipping of dayold chicks across state lines is not af fected. by the quarantines and em bargo regulations against the fowl plague is tbe assurance to Oregon poultry breeders given by the state college experiment station. The .fowl pest has caused con sternation and actual 'loss in. mid dle western states and some states further east, says Dr. IS. T. Simms, head of the veterinary medicine department, but has not appeared in any state as far west as the Rocky mountains so far as known. Unfounded reports, tend to throw a panic into some poultry growers and damage the breeders corres pondingly. ; . ; Dr L. F. Pelton, state veterinar ian of "Washington, has wired Dr. Simms that the regulations made by that state do not apply to day old chicks. The same may be said of the California regulations, and as far as known, of those of Idaho and other states. I . I COLLEGE ASSURES RAISERS Odorless Dry ! Cleaning 6-Hour Service Cherry Ci 231 N.
