HORSEHAIRS AND , I i HORSEHAIR WORMS An interesting ; discussion on horsehairs and horsehair worms is found! in a recent issue of the Pathfinder. It follows in part: Will a horsehair placed in watei turn-into a snake? Many people believe jit will. This is one oi the superstititions which persist among certain classes of people in the face of modern science and en lightenment. A reader in Ohio writes us as follows: "In tht Pathfinder I just .read an article entitled f'No Snakes from Horse hairs." If tried the i Ssame thing ano the horsehair became a snake ir a few days. I am positive I a snake.". Others testify to elm- By ED WHEEL AN T7) LETVS SEE. ' "Your negative answer to the query whether horsehairs placed in water will change to hair snakes causes me to disagree," writes a woman who says she was born in 1842. "When I was a young girl my parents lived in New York leca than a mile from Lake George. Across the yard back of . the house ran a spring truPk which crossed the road just below Vt the bottom of the brook was' a greiLf light-gray flat rock about v feet acroas over which the water passed- about three inches deep. Many a tne did I watch horsehair snakei une of them two feet long as they iW and wriggled about with a enakc- like motion. Again later after we had moved to town a hogshead was kept under the eaves near the back door, for holding rain water. Mother wished to keep it clean and said we should use a cop to dip from It, but sometimes wtieu In a hurry getting ready tor school I would dip my hand or my comb in the rain water to moisten my hair when braiding. After a while mother called mo to account for not minding what she had said. She said she had seen hair snakes in the water and that there was nobody to accuse except myeelf. Afterward when the sun was shining I looked in the water and could plainly see hair snakes a half yard or more In Jength wriggling and swimming about the same as there in the brook.1 I m a believer in hair snakes."-' Another subscribe, sends the following note: "I notfew In your paper, where-a party asks whether a horsehair placed in running .wa ter will turn to a snake. I don't know whether you would call it a snake or not. but try it Pull a live hair from a horse's tail or your wife's head if you have a wife put it in a fruit jar of warm water and after a few days it will become a living something 4 and will swim with upraised head. Put it on the floor and it will squirm and try to cfawl." Still another correspondent wrft3 as follows: "Many years ago some friends and I were walking 'on a romJ near the farm stables and our attention was attracted to a wriggling mass In a wet spot in the road. Exam ination revealed a lot of horse hairs in their natural form, but there were many in the group i squirming. Close inspection show ' ed what appeared to be a natural head on eaeh end and two eyes on each head. We watched them care fu ly for quite a while andthen taking some-in-' our hands and drawing them through the fingers' stripped them, of the gelatinous substance with which they were coated perfectly and nothing b-t horsehairs- remained." We quote from these letteri merely to show how deeply thit old superstition ia intrenched. We receive hundreds of letters on this horsehair-snake question every year. Yet anybody with even a' superficial knowledge of natural history knows that a hair can never turn into a worm. If there Is any fundamental principle of biology . upon which all educated people are agreed it is that an in animate object will not become animate by anything we can do to it. The human race has done some wonderful things, but so far it has never succeeded in breathing life into an inanimate object. And a hair is an inanimate thing it ia not alive, . . Where, then, does the horse hair, myth have its origin? This question is answered by Dr. H. G. May in the Guide to Nature, pub lished at Sound Beach, Conn., by the Agassis Association. The old myth, says Dr. May. had Its origin purely and simply in circumstan tial evidence. "A hair is seen in a watering trough and later a worm !a seen in the same trouble while . the hair is not found. Moreover, the worm has some resemblance to the hair. The usual explanation is that the hair has turned into a worm." There is no question that imperfect observation Is re sponsible for the horsehair falla cy. ; There is such a thing as a horsehair worm which looks somewhat like a horsehair, but it was never a hair. , Dr. -May gives an interesting account of the life history of se sral epecies of hairworms. These worm are parasites in their larva tage. Mating occurs in the sprinsr tnd the eggs are deposited in the -ater in thick strings which break upon short pieces. Under the mi croscope the larvae resemble fiy .naggots. The larvae attach them selves to some insect. Beetle, crickets, grasshoppers and cock roaches are common hosts for h; hairworm. "The fully duveiope-1 worm." says Dr. : May. "taked ip a position in the host euch that its anterior end is at the posterior ud of the host and f.omcf U:m partly protruded. In this pohition it waits for contact, with water When the host gets into the wat -r the worm Immediately proofed to leave the host and to take up its free eistx'enc in the water. The worms em ergo in August, Ser-tem-ber-and October and are then round swimming about in the stream or etranded singly anion? .he grass and debris." The worm remain singly until early spring when they gencrailr accumulate ia ma sues about the roots at jrrasi la or near rapids in streams. These ere the worms which many peo ple erroneously believe wcrv orij i.ially horsehairs.
