Dur ing the short session; of congress beginning .December 1, eight spe cial senate investigating commit tees will be required to submit fi nal reports on their findings. .At the last session ot congress ten Investigations were i authorized, and only two 'of them . were com pleted. ; The "diploma mill' Inquiry, of which Senator -Copeland, Demo crat, New York, was chairman concluded hearings and recom mended two bills to congress, nei ther of which i hag passed. One bill would prohibit the circulation through the malls of "diploma mill" literature and the other would create a council of univer sities and colleeea and fix sbtand ards for educational Institutions in the District of Columbia. The Veterans Bureau Investiga tion, was completed by the, com mittee of which Senator Reed. Re publican. Pennsylvania, was chair man. and the evidence turned over to the courts. The uncompleted hearings are those dealing with the govern ment oil leases In the Teapot Dome and California fields ad ministration of the department of instice under former Attorney General Daugherty'a charges ot fraud in the sale of Texas lands, conduct of the Internal Revenue Bureau, campaign expenditures, the Mayfield election contests Russian propaganda. In the United States, and charges of. the use ' of propaganda to influence legisla tion. Further hearings Into campaign expenditures will be held shortly after congress convenes. This in vestigation was authorized under a resolution introduced by Senator LaFollette, Republican, Wisconsin, and the investigation was. opened durlnz the last few weeks of the campaign when Senator LaFollette charged the Republicans with us ing a large "slush fund." The Investigation ot the Inter nal Revenue Bureau was started as the result ot a resolution in troduced by Senator Couiens. Re publican. Michigan, which direct ed the committee to recommend corrective legislation at the close of the bearings. Brief hearings were held during the summer re cess, but. the committee recessed while Earl Jw Davis. ! committee Counsel and his staff of Investlgat ors assembled additional informa tion. - ' i Senator , Spencer, Republican, Missouri, chairman of the commit tee investigating the election of Senator Mayfield, Democrat, Tex as, plans . to reopen that inquiry after congress assembles. The in vestigation is the result ot a con test brought by George E. B. Ped- dy. Independent Democrat, who was endorsed by the Republicans In the; Texas campaign. Peddy's petition charges that ithe Texas election laws were violated, and that the Ku Klux Klan influenced the election. . ; IS RACE ! If the average person were ask ed' whether a child, who had pass ed his tenth birthday, has greater probability of dying of tubercur losis than of cancer, he probably would reply "tuberculosis." This is mainly because of the war on tuberculosis by various organize tions; but a greater war remains to be waged on cancer, for after the age ten there is more prob ability of a child dying ot cancer than of .tuberculosis. In fact, according to the latest Statistical Bulletin of the Metro politan . Life Insurance company, of 100 boys aged 10 more than eight will eventually die of cancer while less than seven out of the 100 will die from tuberculosis. For girls of the same age the probability of death by cancer is more ' than eleven out of every 100 and for tuberculosis a trifle over: six. s 1 - 1 - The probability of death from cancer increases decidedly with age. For men at 30 it is more than 50 per cent greater than the tuberculosis probability. Women at 30 have almost three times as great a probability of dying of cancer af? of tuberculosis. At 40, among males, the chance of dying eventually from cancer is twice as high as from tuberculosis. Fr females at this age the cancer hazard is nearly four' times that for tuberculosis. With advan cing age the cancer death figures for males rapidly tend to approach those for' females. "With a rising cancer death rate and failing tuberculosis death rate in prospect for the immediate future," says the Bullettln, "we may expect a greater disparity In the figures for caner and' tuberu losis probabilities. ' "The control -of tuberculosis has1 engaged public attention for many years. Annually, millions of dollars have been raised for purposes of public education, for providing sanatorium facilities and for effective research into tu berculosis. At present, provisions for cancer research, diagnosis and treatment are meagre in compari son with the' magnitude of the task and, the importance of can cer as a source, of diminished lon gevity . and of intense suffering. The .purpose, of this note is to emphasize the real importance of the cancer burden and to suggest that .funds and facilities for - re- ?arc!r -iagnosls and i treatment RE M TIED rf. rV V 1 FOR SALE Miscellaneous 0 CLASSIFIED SECTION Phone 23 Advertising Dept, CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENTS EU pr word:. ROAD CAPACITY Automobile manufacturers who for years have seen the increased production of cars confound the prophecies of saturation of the automobile market should begin to realize that a new element has entered the field and. that it be hoores them 'to prepare for it. Heretofore the prophets of pro duction saturation hare based their prophecies on' the supposed inability of the public to find any more money for automobiles. But the money continues to be found. and it will continue to1 be found probably for a long- time if the prospective owners can find any place to run their automobiles' in comfort and with pleasure, . No one sees, the congestion in our city streets and on our county . " . " . i tne saturation point or automo bile production is not going to be measured by the purchasing pow er of the people but by the cap acity of our highways. Unless more and better highways are built and more and wider streets are opened the use of the auto mobile will become a diminishing utility or pleasure. The lesson to the automobile manufacturer should be plain. . Hitherto he has fought every ; effort to make the automobile pay for any road or street construction. Maintenance he Was; willing to support because obviously the car wore out the road, but construction he held was the duty of the whole public and not that part of the public that operated motors. As a theory that may still be reasonable; but if the automobile manufacturer reads the signs aright he will see that practically he had better do all he can to help get new roads and streets because sooner or later and very soon demand for a u to ed centers the demand for auto mobiles is going to 'be seriously diminished by the simple fact that there will be no . place to run them. Hordes of autos now remind usf We should build our roads stay, to And departing leave behind us" Kinds that won't be washed away. When our children pay the mort gage Father made to haul the loads. They'll not have to ask the ques tion ; "Here's the bonds,' but Where's the roads?" The annual highway expendi tures are approximately $1,000, 000,000. The total annual taxation . In the United States is $9,000,000.- 000, of which $654,000,000. or about 7 cents out of every tax dollar, is expended for highways. Only 2 cents out of every dollar of federal money goes for roads. Of all inventions, with the ex ceptions of the alphabet and the printing press, those which abrid ged distances have done the most for mankind. Macaulay.
