W J Oregon Prune Sale Aided by Local Business Man An unique and effective method of advertising the Oregon grown prune is employed by Ralph Cooley, manager of f the Bishop's Woolen Mills store. Sample boxce. of the Oregon prunes are pre sented the officials and repre sentatives of the large manufac turing firms of the east. In this manner other members of those firms are introduced to the Oregon prune and consequently an order is secured. As a reault of this procedure 750 boxes of Oregon prunes were sold, of which 110 boxes went to a firm which furnishes the Bishop store with shoes;; and 650 boxes to an overall manufacturing firm. Each box of prunes! weighed' 10 pounds and resulted in the plac ing of 7500 pounds of fruit in the east. , ; ; Aa a rule several re-orders are secured'. i Much advertisement of Oregon is thus insured. HR EE MINUTE IL By - Ad Schuster THK "XECESSAltY" EVILi From Palisades to, Eureka It went.: puffing throiigh the sage brush and boiling up the grades, and the country tide called it the "Necessary Evil." fA 4ocomotive of a type abandoned by the elev ated railroads of New York ' and Chicago when electricity took the place of steam, a couple of box ?ars, perhaps a fla car and an oil' tank, and, on the epd, a com bination baggage and passenger :ar the Necessary ; Evil was as luerr a string of beads an was iver dragged across the desert. Those who would grant the "Necessary." as . obvious might pause over the "Evil" or hold that the mighty puffing, the shrill and vainglorious whistling and the general trembling of boiler which seemed to threaten an ex position had earned the descrip tipn. In truth it was the train's By ED WHEELAN VELL .VAELL VJJATCH y ATTACH HERE, habit of jumping the track that was responsible for many long, vehement and picturesque descrip tions voiced by men versed in the art and of these there was none tiiore profane than Monte Mur dock, the engineer, Monte knew that-whenever the train carried an important con signment of freight or passengers, it was sure to leap the rails. Eureka, looking forward to a minstrel show to break a season of darkened "opera house" turn ed It wrath, upon the Necessary Evil when troupe, trombones, and interlocutor were stranded in the prairie until the rescue crew could put the. old train back upon the tracks. Heavy orders of Ice cream purchased for the Fourth of July demands, melted in the sun while the town went without The engineer wag the only one who saw anything sinister in these accidents. The rest of the town blamed the- old rails and equip ment but Monte came to believe that something else was respon sible. For one thing, the train, nine times out of ten, jumped the track at one place where there was no curve and . the roadbed was level, Monte took to run ning slowly here and drew a great sigh of relief whenever he passed without mishaps. Then he noticed the squirrel. It was a saucy and scrubby lit tle squirrel and it sat on a post and chattered as the train ap proached. In time the engineer recognized it as fact that when ever he could -see the squirrel waiting on its post, the train was going to have an accident. At first he had been . so concerned with the bumping of the cab and and the dangers of the situation that he did not notice the animal but after numerous derailments, exasperation took .the place of ex citement and Monte noticed that the Bquirrel seenicd to be leaping up and down in enjoyment of the sight. The thing seemed' so uncanny and preposterous that he dared not mention it in his re ports to the railroad or even In conversation .with friends. The train continued to jump the track with a costly frequency and the railroad company continued to work on the dangerous stretch in the hope of applying a remedy. Extra heavy rails laid on an Im proved , roadbed until that one vtretch would have been credit-, able on the main line and yet. right there where the squirrel sat n the post,-the Necessary Evil eft the rails with the first dog nd pony show of the season. The genial Monte became mor- tt ..l j . . m t use. lie cuuiu not ucip out icei these accidents reflected upon hit qualifications as an engineer but more than all he was silenced with the feeling that he was deal ing with the supernatural. Onci he was certain the squirrel had put Its paw" to its. nose In deri sion. He knew it was laughing, that it was waiting its time, and he was afraid of it. v: Why didn't he shoot the squir rel?. The question persisted in the mind of the engineer who put a shotgun in the cab and tried in vain to summon courage for the act. Several times he drew aim on the animal only to lower the barrel. "It just sets there and laughs," he muttered. "It's daring me to fire. Wonder what would hap pen if I did." Again the train jumped the track. . Monte took a young man with him in the cab and, as they approached the danger spot, hand ?d him the. gun. . 7 "See "that ' squirrel?" he asked with pretended indifference. "Bet you "can't hit him." 1 The engineer turned Ills head away and waited for the rest. It would not have surprised him bad the boiler blown up or. had the whole train leaped into the air. He heard the gun roar and the Necessary Evil swaying and pant 'ng moved along. . "Did you bit him?" Monte ask ed and there were tremendous hop? and appeal In the voice. "Sure, knocked him sky-high." And it is a matter of record hat the Necessary Evil has not lumped the track in six months. (Copyright 1924 By The Bell Syn dicate Inc.)
