Dec. 12.---Zero tem peratures together Cwlth a scar city of snow protection for the winter crop did a good deal today to lift the value of wheat. AH deliveries touch a new high price record for the season, closing from 7-8 to 2 1-8 cents net high er, May 1.21 1-4 to l.zi 3-5 ana July 1.12 1-4 to 1.12 1-2. Corn gained 1-S to 5-8 cents, oats fin ished at 1 1-8 cents decline to 3-4 cents advance, and provisions varying from a setback ot 12 cents to a rise of ? cents. Despite much profit-taking on the part of holders and notwith standing that the Liverpool mar ket failed to respond fully to yes terday's advance in prices on this side of the Atlantic, wheat bulls here acting on crop damage possi bilities had the advantage throughout the day except during brief intervals. "Incidentally, strength of sterling exchange more than offset the apparent slowness of upturns in Liverpool wheat quotations. It was a subject ot considerable comment that the Liverpool and Chicago May wheat spread has widened about 2 cents in the last few days, owing more or less to the sharp rise of sterling a Jump ot 17 points as compared with a month ago and of 50 points lis against this time last year. -On the other hand, enthusiasm of buyers , here was somewhat checked as a result of weakness in Argentine prices.. Corn and oats averaged higher with wheat December oats, hoever, were de pressed by liquidating sales on the part of holders. Downturns in the value of hogs had a bearish influence on provisions. -Why tall this lolderol. and trip around Caps Hor?" STERLING RISE CHIEF INTEREST London Market Precipi tates Advance NEW YORK, Dec. 12. Chief merest in today's financial mar ket centered on the further spec tacular rise in sterling exchange, demand bills touching 4.63, an overnight rise of 4 cents, and a new high price since 1919. Heavy selling of dollars in London mar ket precipitated the rise in sterling. Stock prices showed a much better tone, but trading was again almost entirely a profes sional affair. "Yes I have," he returned a bit shamefacedly, "although I sup pose you'll laugh at it, and think I'm the original person that.c,ould feel a crumpled roseleaf through seven - mattresses.. .But that change at Jamaica in going to New York has been getting my goat ever since I came bac across seas. You Just get settled in a seat and comfortably to reading or talking, when you have to trail off on the platform. And you know that in cold weather it's no Joke standing out there." "Yes, I know." I shivered reminiscently. "But how will you better yourself anywhere else? You're not going to leave Lona; Island if you sell?" "Not on. rour golden wedding day!" Dicky rejoined. "But there are any number of places, pretty ones, too, where you don't need to change'- "I don't believe I'd like to go over to the Sound.". J . said, not caring particularly what I said. ust so it would prolong the con versation until Dicky should for get having spoken of Edith Fair faix. "You don't have to. There are several other places on the middle line, within three or four miles of Marvin." "I never knew that." I said, with simulated interested. "I thought conditions were the same everywhere. That is an induce ment. I will admit, to have thrnnrh train service to New York." "Don't you think you'd better change your mind, sweetheart, and sign the pay-pers " Dicky coaxed.
