The state ment is repeatedly made that if normal conditions returned, so that retail sales of flax -products were such as to bring about or ders from, the mills, and a re sumption of even two-thirds of the manufacturing capacity . of pre-war-times, the present supply of flax fiber would not last 'more than three months. The accumu lated supplies of flax products are reported to be-. gradually' becom- .- H- ing exhausted and increasing or ders, though in small volume as yet, are being 'received by the spinning- mills, The outlook therefore seems favorable for a good market for flax fiber dur ing the coming year. No reports hare reached this office from any source ' Indicating an increased acreage that might possibly over stock, the market with flax fiber. It is too late now to secure flax seed from Holland for sowing this spring. : It would be impossible to secure it so as to reach Oregon before .May. I will endeavor to have socio seed of our ' pedigreed fiber flax that has been developed by, 13 years of selection forward ed, to Oregon for trial next year unless we have a failure in the increase plats this season as we did last year. The excessive drought in Michigan practically ruined our crop . as ' well, as the commercial crop last Beason. A half bushel of this improved seed was sent to Mr. Crawford for sowing last spring, and a similar amount to Mr. Thomason, but we have received no report from either of them regarding results obtained. I. feel sure that very much tet ter seed may be obtained by grow ing it in Oregon under careful conditions than by importing It from Europe. The , flax growers in Michigan and "also in Ontario have had the same tradition that thejfe Is fa; Oregon, that it was necessary to-Import seed at" f re qaent iatervals In order to se cure good flax, and even in Hol land thjey i&Te held that it was necessary Co secure new supplies of seed from Russia, but within the past five years it has been clearly demonstrated in Holland. Ontario and in Michigan, that very much better flax may be produced from home grown seed that has been developed under careful, selection..
