Harriet Braithwaite pressed my arm significantly when' she gave me a welcoming kiss. With Jun ior still In my arms for I had no Intention of relinquishing him to anybody for a while I nodded understanding, and managed as soon as possible to ; go up to ray room which she was occupying during her Tisit. Dicky, my fa ther and I were to continue to ac cept Mrs. Durkee's neighborly hospitality until the departure ot our visitors. "Come In, Margaret," she smil ed brightly at me and ;made me comfortable in her dignified. gTa cioug fashion. Harriet Braith waite is a woman who is the grande dame always, but there Is something about her rare smile that one distinctly values. "Before we speak of anything else," she said when she had set tled Junior and me upon the cha'se longue by the window "let me tell you that I fully apnrectate the successful effort you made to keep your noise when mother pre cipitated that unfortunate met M.lB dent about the baby's recognition of you. Mother is one of the best women In the world, but tact is a word that isn t in ner vocaDU lary. The good fairy who had that quality to give must have been forcibly detained by some wicked sprite at the time of her christening. I must confess I had my misgivings rtout the ultimate dbnsequences of having you two in the same house, but you have managed her beautifully, my dear. and as her daughter, I'm grateful to you." A Deprecating Request. , "Thank you." I said a bit trem ulously, for I was still a bit upset emotionally. She looked at me shrewdly and changed the subject abruptly. Don't you want me to take care of Junior while yon take your tub?" she said. "You i look un comfortably warm." "If you add . 'horribly dusty you will describe me better," I re plied. "But I have a weakness for a leisurely bath, and perhaps you can imagine how much chance I would have of that, with Dicky waiting for a shower.- I have told both Dicky and my father that I will wait until they are clothed and in their right minds before l appropriate the bathroom. ' Mrs. Lnderwood and Marlon I have, of course, gone to their rooms at the Durkees." i i 'Then I need have no com punctions about keeping you for a little chat?" she asked deDre- catingly. 'That ,U what I am here for," I smiled, then, without further sparring, went straight to the thing I knew was on her mind.- "I wrote to Katherine four days ago and expected an answer, out! at the camp before I left. But iti didn't come. I, left ' word for the mail to be forwarded here. She ia always very prompt, and I am sure I will hear from her by to morrow. Did Dfcky! mention hat ing seen Jack in town?" Katie Brings News. "Xo!" There was. a startled note in her Yoice, though her face and eyes didn't change their ex pression. But I knew that she was agog with interest. ."'They are going west within a very . snort time.", ii purposely made my news as concise as pos- sioie. . "Katnerins isn't weU. and Jack has a wonderful opportunity to xare up his old work out lher." "He la bettor then?" Mrs Braithwaite asked.' - Today 25c , I Constance Binncy, - . "Going away!" she repeated the words half to herself. "I wonder whether, after all " 1 had no chance to speculate upon her meaning, for Katie's unmistakable knock sounded on the door. Mrs. Braithwaite call ed, "Come in," and my little maid appeared, rosy, beaming, with a letter in her hand. "Dis coom joost before vou get here," she explained. "Special. Jim, he sign dot ting for it. I for get when you downstairs, so-1 run oop joost now qveeck." "Thank' you, Katie." I said se dately, with the laudable ambitiord of quieting the girl s volatile spirits. I knew that she was much elated over the success of her little ruse with the baby, knew that she was apt to come to grief because of her high spirits. which were apt to border danger ously upon impertinence. "Will you take Junior now? It's time for his nap, isn't it?" "In feefteen minutes. Coom, babee, go bye-bye Katie." To my gTeat delight Junior evinced great satisfaction with his place in my arms, and it was only by dint of much coaxing that he finally permitted Katie to transfer his small body to her waiting' arms. When she had borne him triumphantly away I looked at the letter she had brought to me. "It's from Katherine!" I ex claimed. "Addressed here. Now we ehall know when they will be here with us."
